going for the gusto...

thanks for all the help :)!!!! i put the block on the leaf springs and raise them up so the axle (not connected) was resting on them. then i moved the axel till it went into place... thanks for all the help!!!! Tomorrow i think i'm going to flip the adjuster up front to bring it down a tad more than the back. I think i can rest the frame on jack stands and use a jack to bring up the torsion bar far enough to slide off the adjuster. besides this probably not being safe, does anyone see anything wrong with it?

How big are the blocks in the back? I gotta admit, I dont think lowering a 4X4 a lot is a good idea. An inch or two should be fine but any more and you may be asking for it.

the blocks in back are 2 inches
the front has to be dropped about 4 just to make up for it... my left side dropped 4 just from removing the bolt, but the right side is still 1/2 inch too high, so i'm going to flip the adjuster and try to turn the bolt up it up to the right height

how do you get the weight off the torsion bars?? you have to in order to flip the adjuster, right? do you jack up the front frame or the front arms?

Hey guys, flipping the adjustor was really easy, installing the blocks wasn't too bad either. Now i just need an allignment. There is 2 inches from the tire to the wheel-well (i wasn't sure where to measure from) are there any specifications i should give to the allignment shop? like camber adjustments... etc..?

Did you use the 2-arm puller to flip the adjuster or did you use the jack?

I used the 2 arm puller at first to raise up the adjuster and slide out the plate holding it up. My torsion bar was only hanging down an inch and stayed in placed perfectly the whole time i worked with it. Putting the torsion bar back up with the 2 arm puller wasn't easy as the arms kept moving little at a time, and the bolt in the middle wasn't long enough to push the adjuster back up far enough, so i just used the jack to move it up. I didn't see any safety concerns, as the frame itself was supported by jack stands (not the arms), which I think made it so easy to work with the torsion bar, and the bar only had an inch it could fall down anyways, so i got out from under the x, placed the jack under the adjuster in the spot where the puller would have been, and jacked it up until it was up high enough to quickly slide in the plate that the adjuster rests on. Then I just cranked down the adjuster onto the plate. Very easy job. If i can do it by myself, i'm sure others of you can, after all I'm only 16!

this whole adjustment process it DOES work for a 2000 4dr 2wd right? i am getting 20" rims with 275-40-20 tires for them. do you think these will rub? and if they do what could i do to fix it?

The 2000 4dr should have torsion bar in front with leaf in the back, so yes the whole adjustment will work. As for the tires rubbing, i've seen explorers with 20s so i don't think they will rub. Get really low profile tires and it shouldn't, if it does, i don't know what you could do but i'm sure someone does

I have dropped my X about 3 inches all around, what specs should i tell the shop for an allignment as far as camber and everything, what are factory specs. One shop won't do it because they said with lowering kits they come with specs on how to adjust it, but since i didn't use a kit they don't know the specs??? (which you need really bad if you drop more than about 2 1/2 inches using a torsion adjustment)

The best way would be to get the 20" rims and whatever size tires you want, then you will see how much you can lower it without rubbing. If you lower it first it will just be a guessing game.

umm... a good shop should have all the latest computer gizmos and shouldnt have a problem.

Just thought I'd post here and tell everyone that I went for the gusto. That's right I did the torsion adjuster flip! I will post some pics tomorrow!

Help... Help... Help...

My X is at the shop now and they say they cant do anyhting for the camber and don't think they can do anyhting for the alignment. What do I need to tell them to do? I thought I read something about shims or something.

they will have to use the camber adjusters. any good alignment shop will have these in stock. i think once you go 4" or more you cant get alignment dead on, but you can get it very close. if they did not mention using alignment kit and are saying that they cant align it, then take it somewere else. no offense if you use the shop often and like them, but its not that rare a procedure to do one. thats why most shops have the kits in stock. if your X has been wrecked hard in the front in the past, i could see them having problems. but, to me, it sounds like they either dont want to mess with it or are not a good alignment shop.

I think they dont want to mess with it. A bunch of old men (no offense anyone) who think stock is the best. lol... thanks

I just went and picked it up. They finally agreed to put the camber kit on it, and wow. I didn't realize how bad it was off until I look at how it should be.. hehehe..

i'm having that same problem explorer4u... 1 of the independent shop said it was impossible, 1 said that it would be 250 and it wouldn't be gaurenteed, and the good year shop said they don't touch anything with suspension modifications....... they're all a bunch of *******, i mean.... money is money

i got mine done at a good year shop for $125
