Going to a plus 1 size; P255x70x15....Opinions?

Hi all. I have a set of BFG/AT's on order, in a 255x70x15 size. I didn't want anything too radical, just something slightly wider than the stock 235's, with close to the same diameter.

According to my figures, the 255 is about 7/8" wider than the stock 235's, and about 1/4" taller; about as close as I could get.

Is anyone running this size on their Explorer, or have any opinions?

For diameter, that is a good choice. A rule of thumb for diameter change is this:

Every 10mm wider section width changes the diameter 1/2"
Every 5% change of series(profile) changes the diameter by 1"

You have added 20mm of section width, and reduced the profile by 5%, thus the same diameter tire(29"). The 16" factory Explorers usually have 255/70/16 tires, which are 30" tall. Good luck,

i have 30x9.50 buckshot mudders on my 99 explorer (very similar to the BFG m/t) and they fit fine with no trimming, they rub slighty when making a tight turn backing up but thats all, nothing even bad enough to think about, seeing as how yours are all terrain yours prolly wont rub at all, hope that was the info u needed

I have P255/70-15 Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTS on my stock rims on my '96 XLT. My "X" is lifted about 2-inches and there is no rubbing on the front when turning.

I just placed 255/70-15 on Monday, no problems with steering or s.e.. Fits great w/o any mods of the fenders. No need for any adjustment of speedo, because the 255/70 has just a little more circumference than the 235/75 stock. ( 255/70 : 231.85 cm (91.27") 235/75 : 230.44 cm (90.7") )

I prefer the Toyo-600 instead of the BFG-AT´s cause I drive 95 % streets and only 5 % "off-road"

A guy at work used to run 255/70's on his stock V8. They looked alot better than the stock 235's. They didnt rub.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. From what you are saying, I don't think I'll have any trouble with rubbing. My thoughts exactly, about the wider tread looking better than the stock 235's, plus giving a slightly wider track.

Crizz, nice looking Explorer. Those '12 hole' rims are a favorite of mine.

R.O.E., I love ´em, too. But have been in a very bad condition. Worked 3 days to get them back to an acceptible finish. But it was worth it.

What did you use to replace the false rivets?

You woulnd´t believe if I say it´s still rivets. They only look like screws. In GE, we call ´em "Keskin-Screws" because most of the Keskin-Alu-Wheels are with these fake-screws.

Wheeltuners sell them very expensive, about 1 $ up to 1.50 $ / EA (!). I did a good deal at ebay.de and got a set of 120 pcs for round about 50 bucks.

Important is only the diametr of 6.5 mm ( 6.3 mm, i know - it was the meassurement the seller wrote - but they fit like the original rivets ).
