I'm planning to go look at a Explorer, that I've had my eye on for awhile. Here's the run down on it.

1998 Ford Explorer XLT.
5.0L V8 Engine
2 Wheel Drive
75,000 Miles
Leather Seats

Used Car Lot

$5995 + Tax/Tag/Title

Here's some pictures of it. Only thing I can tell from the pictures, obviously is the wrinkeled carpet in the cargo area and faded headlight corners?. There's not a water leak the guy said. He said he's seen steam cleaning do that before. I presume removing the trim pieces and then trucking it back in would fix it. So what do you think about this vehicle itself, and the the deal?

Without knowing exactly what options the explorer your lookng at has i have rounded all the prices show to the nearest hundred. So these prices are not exact. Also as a side note although kelly blue book has trade in values listed you'll get half if that of what is shown.

Heres the rundown from Kelly blue book

As to the price you have shown, your getting a good deal, i would say offer them $5,300 and see if you can get some money off the price.

The retail value is about $6,700 Excellent condition

The private party value is $5,300 Excellent condition
The private party value is $4,900 Good condition
The private party value is $4,300 Fair condition

The trade in value Excellent condition $4,000
The trade in value Good condition $3,600
The trade in value Fair condition $3,000

purty good deal i'd say, im pretty sure you can fix the faded corners too

I got my 97 5.0L with 75K for $5,000, but that was in CT where more people drive luxury SUVs. I would try and at least get that price down to $5,500, he/she isn't going to be able to sell it very easily with gas prices the way they are.

Also, that listing is wrong. There is no 2 wheel drive 5.0L Explorer. All the 5.0L are AWD.

The headlight corners do fade, and that carpet can be straighten out pretty easily.

No, the listing is correct. All Explorers are available in 2WD with the option of AWD or 4x4 depending on what engine.

Try to get the price down. I saw a 98 Mounty w/ 5.0L and AWD here for 5K

There was only 1 drivetrain option with the 5.0L, AWD. I've never seen a stock 2WD version.

Duke sorry you are wrong, there are lots of 2wd 96-2001 5.0L explorer's
There was NO 4x4 OPTION, only 2wd or AWD

I too have never seen a 2wd 5.0L ex because I live in Colorado, if I lived in Texas or Southern California the AWD version would be rare.

2wd likely have 3.55 gears

$6K is high for that truck IMO I would offer 5 max, but here in CO there are plenty of 5.0L Explorer's to choose from, so that and the fact that its a dealer might be why its $6K

I stand corrected then. I'd never seen or heard of a 5.0L 2WD Explorer, only the ones that had been modded here. Edmunds doesn't even have that option listed for the '98.

I wouldn't pay too much for it sense most people are trying to get rid of their SUV's. Take advantage of that and pay bottom dollar. It looks in great shape but I don't think I'd go much more than $3000. Remember that even though it's in great shape it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and that isn't much these days especially not knowing what gas prices are gonna do. You will like your explorer even more if you get it for a great price. I paid only $2000 for my 1996 Eddie Bauer 2 years ago.

My Father had a 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition, I loved it. I wished I hadn't passed it up to keep my 93...

He to bought it used, but it was from Ford Certified, so he got oil changes for a year, new tires, and just about anything else in the engine that needed fixing for free. Not sure how much he paid, but he sold it when it had about 120k on it, and it still ran amazing.

All stock, on the highway I averaged around 23-24 miles a gallon using cruise control. and mind you i'm 20, so you can imagine how i drive.

GET IT! YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!!

I'd sell my '99 2WD 5.0 in a heartbeat for $6k

It's the same color, no faded lights, and the carpet isn't wrinkeled:D

Well I made the 240 mile round trip to look at it on Saturday. I got there looked at it maybe for 10 minutes and left. Front bumper has rust in it, under side has a rusty/nasty look, clear coat is going on the roof in more than one spot, driver seat has a rip, carpet has stains. Needless to say I am pretty pissed off. This is the 5th one I've gone and looked at in person. Always some issues, what's the deal here. Can't anyone take care of anything, I mean come on the ones I'm looking at are 98-01's only 7-10 years old. I'm geting tired of this.
