Good, cheap sub? MtX 8000? Infinity Perfect?

I was going to wait and squirel money away until I could afford something really nice, But having no sub is killing me. I can get a Mtx 8000 12" for under a $100. I was wondering if anyone has any input on this sub for this price? I'm probably going to run it in a sealed box, of about 1.5c.f. Are there any other subs in this price range that I should consider? I looked at Audiobahn, but am a little leary. I know some of their subs aren't very good, but I have heard a few that weren't bad. Any ideas/input would be appreciated.

i have had the 3 mtx 10s in my car for over a year, and they sound good, i just recently about 4 months ago put a single audiobahn 12 with 1100 watts rms in my explorer, it does sound great, but its the longevity that im worried about now, the first one went on me in about 4 months, and im on the second one for just over a week, and if u start to play it hard, it doesnt like it, so im definitely looking for something with more life in it, but mtx doesnt have enough power for my taste, but they are definitely reliable.

In my opinion, the 8000 is a great sub. It is probably more heavy duty then you will need, but if you can get one for $100 (where, btw?), I say go for it.
Unless you are running lots of power, the MTX 6000 will actually be better.

My buddy blew a few audiobahns, which is what made me leary. They weren't one of their top models however.
I'm running a Planet Audio P250. Its a little power house that puts out a true 300 watts. I ran it at 3/4 gain for 6 hours and it wasn't even sweating. A friend of a friend of mine has a single 12, new in the box. Before he could install it he got a deal on a pair of 15's. I considered getting 2 10" 6000's.

Man thats awesome. For $100 bucks I say go for it.
It will eat up the 300 watts and smile :)

Yeah, I planned on the amp running a little warm on this sub. I am upgrading from a Pioneer IMPP w34c, so I'm sure I'll be pleased. The Pioneer ran at about an 1/8 on the gain, so the amp is used to slacking. That'll have to change. PLus my new HU has sub controls and 4volt sub outputs vs 2volt. I'm going to go ahead and get it. Thanks for the reasurance. :)

the mtx subs are much more durable than the audiobahns. imo all other considerations aside if you plan on beating on some cheap subs (under $250 retail) durability is by far the most important thing and the mtx is great for that and it sounds amazing.

Unless you are only interested in high, window rattling bass, id say stay away from that 3-10" enclosure. The 6000 series subs are not knows for low bass, but instead volume. If memory serves me correctly, the Thunder 6000's frequency response was 31hz-150hz and resonant frequency was closed to 40hz. I had 2 12" Thunder 6000's and they sounded nice, but the sq really fell off below 40hz. The 8000 series have a much better low frequency response, but like the other MTX woofers, are not extremely sensitive, meaning it will take more amplifier power to reach the same sound level as a sub with a higher sensitivity rating. If you are looking for a good sounding, price concious, quality sub I would look at getting an Infinity Refrence 12". They can be had for around $80. Just my .02.

I used to know a kid with Reference 12's and I wasn't too impressed. His box, and setup in general wasn't very good, and that was probably 90% of the problem.

Well it just so happens that i am selling the setup u may want, i just put it up under for sale forum, those 3 10s ur looking at and the jbl 600 watt amp, i had the 3 mtx 6000 10s in my car for about a year with that amp and i loved em. im looking for 350 for the package

Thats not a bad deal at all! Just remember with those MTX 10's your going to get more thump than low boom. If thats the style your into, then i highly reccomend what 98 is selling!

I not really looking for something that is muddy, inaccurate and loud. I think the frequency would end up being too high with the 3 10's box. I will probably stick with a single 8000, my amp will at least be able to keep up with that, without falling on its face. The 3 10's would probably tax it too much. I am also going to be stuck with whatever I get for about a year the way things are going.

I agree with you and think you will be happy with the 8000, as long as your amp is big enough to push it.

i think thats a good choice u will be very happy with it =)..then in a year u can buy a new amp and 2 more =) j/k

good luck :burnout:

I really had wanted a pair of subs, that's why the 3 10's were so appealing. I am just afraid of being disappointed with a single 12. I was hoping for a vast improvement over the Pioneer w34c. I'd love to get 2 8000's but then I need another amp. I'm afraid I am going to be lacking in the wattage department, as is.

What about a Fosgate HX2 12? I can get one of those for the same price. Are they worth looking at, or is the power hungry 8000 the better way to go?

If I absolutely HAD to pick between those, Id get the MTX. But like I said earlier, there are SOO many other capable subs for around that price range. Again, for that price, I HIGHLY reccomend the Infinity Refrence. Also for good, clean, low bass you cant go wrong with a jl audio 12w1, or 12w3.

Is the Reference a better sub than the Perfect? The Perfect has some nice specs, and is in my price range. It also recomends a small enclosure, and is ok for free air use which make me a bit leary. I am not a fan of JL and I won't buy it :)

the only thing that can hurt u in this price range is that u cant really get a sub like the 9500s that do both SQ and SPL nicely..u can get a sub that hits harder then the others but it wont have the best SQ...but u can get a sub that has good SQ but will hit like a butterfly tapping at the window..

also isnt there an efficency spec on the sub so u can tell how it is going to use the power hes going ti give it??? i cant remember if there was something like that or not
