Last night I was changing my oil for the umpteenth time.

Everything goes clean and well until it comes time to remove the Oil Filter. I can't seem to keep Oil from going down the ol' arm. I have tried everything from tapping a hole in the bottom to using newspaper bags to go around the filter to catch the spillage.

Then last nigt I saw a old Yogurt container (the larger ones) that sometimes I use for paiting. I decided to loosen the filter and then put the Yogurt container up around the filter and finish loosening it by squeezing the container and turning. Volia! Not a drip spilled, all was caught in the Yogurt container.

Best damn idea I have had yet for that problem and it's been there all along..

Cheers :chug:

NICE IDEA!!
Now i just need to start eating yogurt and i'm in business :)

an idea i'm going to try next time is using a plastic freezer bag put it up around the filter all the way to the top and just spin :)

I've tried that too. The bag gets hot and kind of falls down with every turn. Though if it works well for you at least you have the filter in the bag already:cool:

Even better way is to use a 1 gal size ziplock bag; you never get a drop of oil spilled and you can pour out the oif oil and seal upo the filter in the baf for the disposal.

I have been doing this for years.

hahaha oh man...
warm motor oil is like skin lotion to me...no problem.
Besides if I am under there I cant stop with just the oil change, I have to get dirty...

Great idea though! I always loose and let it drain, then loosen the rest of the way. I have gotten to the point where I can do the whole change with 1 paper towel (no wasting!!) and no oil spilled.

Now if you can just figure out what I should do with the 47 gallons of oil, ATF, and various other fluids I seem to collect because I am too lazy to take it to receyle when I should, that would be GREAT!!!

Great idea!

Now if only we could put the company logo on there and you could charge $9.95 for each one. Nice little doo-hickey for the Ford parts department to sell.
OR, if you paint some Japanese characters on it, that little move would probably increase the horsepower in your engine +10hp! :burnout:

I think they should make the box that the new filter comes in leakproof so it won't leak all over the can when thrown away.

It took all these years to get filters with a non-slip coating for removal.

Yikes so you are using Fram filters....hahaha I wont go there...

At least Ford seems to have put osme thought into accessing the filter, have you ever tried to change the oil on a Honda I-4 or a VW VR6?? what a JOKE!

My Ford filter is too close to the exhaust, but at LEAST I can get teh filter wrench around it..........

haha my first car was an 88 honda accord with the i4, the oil filter was mounted between the block and firewall, plus you had to take the air box off to get to the oil filter. the car was to low to the ground to get to from the bottom, plus i dont think i could have gotten to it anyway from the bottom. it was such a pain in the ass.

Yea, Put a big ass TYPE R on that bad boy and say it has self installing invisible muffler bearings... Sell it for $99.95 on late night television and then get placement in Checker. haha

You laugh now....I bet people would have laughed if you put herculiner on the bottom of your oil filter 5 years ago, or if you put neons under your car...now somebody is laughing at us all the way to the bank!

Yeah I know, a friend of mine had a 2000 Prelude, nice ass car, but when it came time to change the oil I would get so pissed off at Honda...I ended up buying a set of ramps to drive the car up on so I could get under there far enough to grab the filter, even then its half way up the back of the engine, around the ehxaust down pipe and at a funky ass angle. I gave up trying to put oil in the filter before screwing it on. Unless you have a pit like Grease Monkey you can forget it!! The same goes for many other cars, it serisouly took me an hour to FIND the filter on our 2000 VW GTI Vr6, which is the canister style to boot ( I like canister filters if you can GET TO THEM)

I also had a 2000 TJ Sahara with the 4.0L I-6, OH MY GOD Deimler Chysler pull your head out of your ass, there is PLENTY of room on the side of the engine for the filter but there is like 0 way to get that filter on with oil in it, I have ALWAYS filled up my filter with new oil before installing it, not on that Jeep, I would drop the damn filter everytime I tried and spill it out because they put it in the worst place possible.....

I tried the 1 gallon zip lock on my 99 5.0 last night, and still ended up with a mess. Might try the yogart container next. Any V8 people have have a good way to minimize drip? The filter is easy to access, bu it takes about 10 turns to unscrew, and with the coolers and hoses next to it, the zip lock bag was all twisted up. Also it is on about a 30 degree from horizontal angle, so is hard to keep fluid in the filter.
Any ideas on these?
Harold

You might want to loosen the filter some before putting the bag on it; I have to do this on the boat's motors. It works well and is never a mess.

Good luck.....

 What are you guys talking about! I just reach up and twist it off. I never have oil running down my arm. I never use a wrench for the filter. I drain the oil first then twist the filter just enough so any oil will leak on to the filter and then wipe it off. Then just twist off and your done. Who needs a bag or anything.

The one thing I do hate however is the SOHC! That thing susks to change! If the motor is even still a little hot it pours out and hits the lower A-arm and makes a waterfall that just goes everywhere! I dread changing it, so much I thinking of paying to have it done, and I thought I'd never say that.:p

You must have some kind of arm strenght to always be able to remove the oil filter w/o tools/

To solve the oil drain situation on the SOHC is simple - use a Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve. Never a drop is simlled; its great.

Yeah I know about this, but I'm affraid that I will not everything out with this.:(

It's not on that tight, or maybe your right. I once broke a lug off a 3 year old ranger just useing a star wrench:eek:

You should be able to turn the filter by hand.. I only hand tighten it and then maybe another quarter turn on it.. I've pulled mine off before just using a rag for traction, but like everyone else I use a filter wrench to remove it..

I have an 2001 sport with 4.0 SOHC. I might have missed it, but I didn't see it for my vehicle. Does anyone have this? part number?

The cleanest oil change I've done was to punch a hole in the old filter, let it drain for about 30 minutes, then came back, twisted it off, and so forth...

Plastic Bags don't work for me.

plastic bags don't work for me either, they just twist up and I end up with a bigger mess. I've never had to use a wrench when changing filters, either on my 91 exploder, or 88 bronco. Sometimes i've got to work at it for a minute but never have to get a wrench out.
