Got a '87 sammy from the auto swap this weekend!

I flat tow mine as well although it has done a LOT of sitting on jackstands while I'm building it up. For the bumper, extended the frame 8" and slapped on a piece of 2x4 tube and welded on some D-ring mounts. My homemade towbar hooks to those. The bumper also has the spring mounts on it. Jeff is right about the ease of the tow. It tows easier than my 5x10 utility trailer if there is anything on the trailer. I can barely tell the little Zuk is there.
I'd post a pic of it the way it is.. but a Zuk with a stock rear axle under it and a SOA d44 up front looks really really really retarded.
And that 6.1 tcase is junk.. you should take it out immediately and send it to me. :D

Other vendors.. I see Trail Tough gets a lot of great reviews. I haven't bought anything from a vendor yet but I'm sure I will eventually.

Thanks for the info Jason. Should I really pull out the transfer ;).

Not sure when I'm gonna get to work on this thing cause after this weekend I need to work on the X.

So with having three vehicles and a boat with only one income. I have figured I must get rid of something so the boat is going. Once I sell the boat my delema is do I spend it on getting concrete poured or spend it on the Zuk???

And Draper thanks for the pics and mod list. Gives me an idea of where to start and what to run. Thanks!

Hey guys, I need a little help.

Trying to get the blinkers and hazards working. Changed the flasher (not sure if it was the right one cause the #'s didn't match up) nothing. I'm gonna pull the steering colomn apart and check the switch etc.

Also Draper how do you get away with not running any turn signals up front?

What about roll cages? I can just see these things being easy to roll.

The flasher is NOT an off the shelf autozone part. I finally broke down and bought an electronic flasher, and re-wired the box for it. You could have a bum switch.

Roll cages are easy. You can bring it over and I can build one for it.

An "electronic flasher"?? Aren't they all electric?? Not trying to be a smart ass (it just comes naturally) but whats the difference?

Tom aren't you busy with your yard and house still?? If you have time let me know, I'll buy the food and beverages and whatever else you need. I need to get her as street legal as possible first thats why I'm working on getting the blinkers etc to work.

There are two types of flasher - a mechanical type, and a electronic type. The mechanical are work off of electrical load by heating up an element, that causes a metal strip to move back and forth. This is why they change flash rate when the number of bulbs change. The electronic flashers don't care how many bulbs or type of bulbs are attached, and are pure solid state devices (except for the relay they open/close)

The mechanical flasher is way cheaper than the electronic flasher.

As for the yard work - I backfilled the retaining wall last Saturday, so I am no longer in a hurry to get it done, since it's basically done now. :D There's still work to do, but I am planning on doing it in bits and pieces.

I will need $$$ for the tube used - prices have changed big time since the last time I bought any. I do have 3 sticks of 1.5"/.120 wall hanging in the garage, plus we can make up rock sliders if you want too. (1/4", 4x4 angle iron)

Let me know if you want me to send you some $$$ for tube. I can send you $$$ ahead of time so we have the parts?? Yes rock sliders would be great. I need a pair fo the X also seeing how it bends up into the body after Swamp trail.

So do you think I will be able to find the correct flasher or should I look into coverting it to electrical?

From offroad BBS:

To convert to electronic flasher:

Get an EL13 type flasher, two pieces of wire, two male spade and two female spade electrical connectors.

Using the connectors and wire, connect the fuse box post L to post L on flasher. Connect post E to post X on flasher. Your done, except you need to attach the flasher to something (ie, zip tie it to the wiring harness).

Maybe time for a fabfest at the house.. Bring your vehicle, and leave with a few extra lbs of metal on it! :D

I'll have to order up some rollcage footings and get prices on tube/metal. On the X's, I'd use 1.75" tube and 2x2" square tube for sliders. X's are just heavy pigs in comparison to Zuk's. I have the dies for 1", 1.5" and 1.75" tubing.

On the cage part, do you want a full cage for the back half? If so, will there be passengers or not?

My turn signals are now behind the grille :D. I went out and bought 2 orange lights from the local autoparts store, fabbed up a couple angle brackets, and mounted them to the body behind the grille.

Tom I would think a full cage but I'm open for suggetions. What do you think? I'm thinking it would be just a two person rig with the spares etc stored in the back. Like you have yours set up.

Draper, you ever get any crap from the cops with the blinkers like that? I'm sure in Ca they would get pissy over it. Is it Ca law that we have to have a front bumper????

Cops don't give me any problem with those lights here. We also have bumper laws in PA....just ask Lizard!!

It is CA law stating a front bumper is needed.

Of course.. I consider my zuk a trail zuk, which is why I really don't have a front bumper.

There is options for the rear half of the cage. I usually re-use the factory roll bar, since it's actually nicely mounted and pretty strong.

I'm gonna have to fab up bumper or something. I wonder how much area the bumper must cover. Meaning could I cut the ends off the original and mount it???

Is yours green stickered Tom. And whatever you think would be the best and easiest for the cage is fine with me. And thanks for the flasher info. I will try it.

The zuk is still plated in California. There is no inspection process, and I'll just deal with a front bumper issue when it happens. It lives 95% of the time off road, so I'm not really worried about it. Most cops around here look at it in awe when they see it anyway.

Ok got the flasher and hooked it up. I may have fried it cause I didn't hook it up correctly the first time. Still no blinkers, hazards or reverse lights? I looked at the schematic, it shows two hazard switches? I'm gonna check another flasher and make sure I hook it up correctly. Also going to check the blinker assy and the hazard switch just cant get the top of the sterring console off, the hazard switch is in the way? Simple problem is turning into a head ache.

I know this sounds wierd..

Check the ground on the cigeratte lighter. The majority of the dash is grounded through it.

Thanks! Will do. It has to be something funky like that. Also there is a little switch under the dash. I noticed it when I took off the lower steering cover. I switched it but it doesnt' seem to do anything. Funny thing is it looks stock??? Any ideas. I thought it might be a theft deterrent but it starts in either position??

That switch clears the Check Engine Light that comes on at 60k mile intervals.

That's all it does.

Thanks Tom. Well there isn't a cigarette lighter I could locate. The ash tray is gone and I see no wires anywhere back there.

There are a few wires that were plumbed to a stereo wiring harness (there is no stereo). So I'm trying to figure these out.

I'm hoping that all three light problems are corralated.

Ok a little up date. I finally got a steering wheel puller (pulley puller wasn't working) and pulled out the entire dash. I got everything working except the hazards and reverse lights. The hazards I'm sure is the switch and its not worth $50 for the whole assy. The reverse lights I think is the sender the wires are cracked so I'm assuming the sender is bad. There seem to be two senders??? Why would there be two senders? And do I just pull it out and go get another at the auto parts store or is this another pick and pull part?? It started raining so I put the top and doors on. The doors need a lot of work and the top I can only get one side to button down. Oh and what can I do about missing/broken buttons??? When I pulled the dash I found a few wires that plug into nothing??? Also how does the dome light (light on the roof) turn off and on???? For the life of me I can't figure it out???
