My Father in Law bought a 96 XLT OHV in November, 230k kms on it, regular oil changes, tranny allegedly flushed before he bought it, overall, it's fairly decent.

When you give it a heavy right foot, the OD Light flashes, the check engine light was also illuminated.

Had the codes read today, here's what we got:-

P0731 Gear 1 Incorrect ratio
P0751 Shift Solenoid A Performance or Stuck Off

so where do we go from here?

any help would be great, thanks guys

Si

hopefully it is just a stuck solenoid and can be fixed easily, ,
waiting on somebody that knows to help out,

I believe those were the codes I had when I was having a shifting problem after a rebuild. They swapped a solenoid, and it was fine.

Here is some info on that error

DTC P0751 sets if both of the following conditions occur twice:

Condition 1

* The PCM commands first gear for 2 seconds.
* The engine speed is greater than 2.95 times the TCC slip speed.
* The estimated gear ratio is 1.2 to 1.825.
* All conditions are met for 0.5 second.

Condition 2

* The PCM commands fourth gear for 1 second.
* The engine speed is greater than 2.44 times the TCC slip speed.
* The estimated gear ratio is 0.95 to 1.15.
* All conditions are met for 6 seconds.

tomorrow I will lookup the code details and which SS you need to repair

That's awesome..thanks so much guys... The workshop that read the codes for free quoted $250-$300 for parts and labor...

but the father in law can do the labor so hopefully that's half the battle won... but thanks again for the help

OK you will need to check/replace SS1, and also with that mileage you will want to replace the EPC solenoid they start to wear out at about 70k.

You should take a look at the 5r55e rebuild diary in the transmission section.

SS1 is on the side of the valve body with only two valves it is the one located farthest from the engine.

If you are pulling the tranny you will also want to do these things
1) new filter element, make sure you get the one that has the good micro filter material not the screen
2) replace the EPC valve, it takes a lot of abuse and wears out quickly which makes your tranny slip and heat up
3) re-torque your bands
4) perform the ford updates which address some of the weaknesses in the tranny
5) install a shift kit (this is optional but it does help the tranny shifts, changes it from a granny to a tranny :D )
6) use fully synthetic mercon V, I have a temp gauge and believe me when I say these things run HOT!! on any type of incline/high torque situation
7) Add an external filter, Ford recommends this when the tranny is old and the fluid is replaced due to the possibility of dirt being dislodged by the new fluid/detergents. Which could cause more solenoid problems. They recommend installing it in the cooling line after the last cooler before the transmission. (according to the TSB)
8) most importantly READ THIS THREAD FIRST !!!

is it the 5R55E or the 4R55E?

thanks for all the advice guys... awesome!!

Sorry with the OHV engine it would be the 4r55e 4 speed. Sorry I did not see that you had the OHV and with a 96 I incorrectly assumed SOHC. Fortunately they are very similar transmissions.

yes, although the location of SS1 may be different. I don't have the details on the 4r valve body. Everything else applies.

that's great... thanks... at least he knows what he's doing haha... I'm still a newb.. and my Explorer has the 5R55E.. but it's not mine we're gonna be working on!

thanks again

is there any chance you might have a comprehensive list of parts or part numbers that I'd need to fix this?

thanks

Si

ok, so we've got the pans off both trannys. one is allegedly a 4r55e and the other is a 5r55e.

We've just got off the phone to parts source and they say that there is only 1 shift solenoid and that it's on it's own on the passenger side of the pan. They also said that the shift solendoid is the same for both models of trans.

Can anyone help with this before we break something???

I can't really offer any help with your trans issue, as that's something I haven't really "dug" into before.

However, I felt compelled to voice an opinion on your comment above. Yes, I certainly can understand not wanting to pay someone to do a job you (or your father-in-law), can do yourself. However, it's also not right to use the shop like that, having them read the codes for free, knowing that you have no intention of giving them the work. Unless, you do actually give them work on a regular basis, and this is a "special" case, where they were knowingly just doing you a favor. Otherwise, I would be upfront with them, tell them you'll be doing your own labor, and offer to pay a small amount for them to read the codes. It just seems like the fair thing to do. Afterall, you don't know when you might need there help again.

We did tell them that if it was a job that we could do ourselves, that we would be. I nor the FIL led them on to believe that they would be getting any work from reading the codes. I called them and a few other transmission places and asked how much they charged to read codes. This was the only place that said they read codes for free, regardless of whether or not they got any work out of it.

Sorry if my post gave you the impression that I was trying to scam someone.

You may want to also try to adjust your bands- that is stickied as well. How did your fluid look when you dropped the pan? Did you ohm test the suspect solenoid?
