Ever time I turn left at slow speeds, like in to a parking spot, I here a grinding or rubbing noise. It does not do it on right turns. Any idea what to look for?
AWD doesn't really "kick in". It's there all the time. It's AWD . Does it "grind" all the time at low speeds? Mine did it when the wheel was turned, backing out of a parking space, and then stopped. Hasn't done it since. I'm wondering if that was my queue to start gathering parts.
Hey Guys, sorry to bring an old topic back up, but my dad's 98 Sport and my 97 XLT are both having this exact same problem, any suggestions as what it could be. They are both 4WD not AWD.
Like the post say, it probably a bearing. What happens is as the bearing "decays", there is a bit of play. When you turn, the play usually cause either noise in the bearing .... but usually in the fact the the rotor just "gently touches" the caliper support arms.... that's the grinding you hear... I suspect. Mine had the same problem (96). Turn in one direction, big noise, in the other ok.
I just thought about it for a second, and it couldnt be the wheel bearings, I had them rapacked less than 2 months ago when I had my front brakes done, it has been making this noise for about 3 years though, so it couldnt be that.

If yours is a 4wd, and you had your wheel bearings repacked, you got ripped. The bearings are assemblies with wheel studs and the ABS sensor. The bearings can go bad and make noise, but probably never fail.
I agree, my problem was also the same. The passenger side is your likely source. As for bearing wear. I noticed the noise when I bought the vehicle used but figured it was "normal" since the safety only "complained" about the upper ball joints... I did one and the saftey complained the other need work also. Anywas, I drove across the US during that summer without problems (other than noise).... 12Kkm. Upon returning home, the "left turn" problem was evident. I thought it was the brakes... took every off to look... nope brakes were fine. Tried wiggling the tires on either... nope fine. Put everything back and the problem was still there. Closer inspection on the passenger side revealed that there was just a "bit" of play on that side and there were marks on the caliper arms where the rotor was brushing against the caliper on the turns making the "ugly noise".
Well I have the same sound. I had it looked at earlier today. They looked at it for a while and deturmened that its the rack and pinion. They also said that if you can stand to hear the noise it will not brake, I can handle that.
