I have a 96 limited 5.0 awd with 119000 miles on it. When I accelerate from a complete stop it makes this slight grinding sound and vibrates a little bit, until it shifts into second gear. If i get on the accelerator from a complete stop and bring it up to about 4500 rpms its still does it but my rearview mirror shakes and then it shifts into second and is smooth from there. Does anyone know what this is? I have to different tires on the rear right now for temp. use. Could that be it?

AWD's do have problems with the front driveshaft going bad. They have a constant velocity joint that wears out. If thats it, you have to buy a new one - about 225.00. They can cause vibrations because of the bad joint, and can make grinding or rumbling noises .

They can appear to be ok when you check them on the vehicle. Only real way to be sure about them is to pull them off and check the CV joint for any roughness or looseness.

If you have not changed transfer case fluid, you need to do it.
