I heard that the "locals" camp all through out GWNF, just set up a site and party ...at least the under 21. THis year they might not be allowing that with the dry conditions.
I consider myself an H-burg local (at least 9 months out of the year) and thats what I do. You are allowed to camp anywhere in GWNF, as long as it isn't with 50 or so yards from a trail head and or road. There is some great flat land to camp at on the left side of 33 West right on the Dry River. I don't know what the current state of the burn restrictions is though, they change pretty frequently. Actually, I am going camping on saturday by Skidmore Lake (right up 33 west just on the other side of the mountain from brandywine). Its really not that bad camping in the middle of the woods with nothing around you...

Whats the plan for November? Camp....or hotel?

Well, it looks like I may have to come on down there to see this :) Oddly enough, I got sent down to Roanoke the day after I posted, so now I know that it'll take me roughly 4-5 hours to make the trip, which is fine by me.

Namitey and Bobbed Ranger-if you guys are going, count me in! (Can I bum a ride with somebody? I'm not going to have the offroad spare tires that I need in time for this run :( )

How much is it to rent a camping spot? I don't have a tent, but I don't mind sleeping in my explorer....

So still nobody knows if there is a spot I can park my other truck and trailer while i wheel the X? I would thinkk that i could park it at the begning of the trail somewhere, but I have never been up there so I have no idea what it is like. I'd hate to drive all the were up there to find out I can;t park my trialer anywhere... man would that suck.

Please let me know,
Chris

Chris,

Ill find out where people park trailers. I know McDormans is a NO. Are you Camping? I think most who trailer leave it at the camp site- if not ... there is a church at the beginning of old long run that I have left a vehicle or two at - dont know if its proper though, and its not central to the trail heads. A better place may be one of the shopping center parking lots on rt 33 outside of Harrisonburg, also theres a school on 33 west maybe a spot.
VBVA can you check legality of some trailer parking spots next time you go out since you are "local".

Everyone:
If you camp on the trail TAKE your TRASH out with you. A few weeks ago OCC did a clean up run and took out a few tons of crap from dump, and camping sites along Old Long Run, Old Rt 33. Seems like Dry River trail and Kephart have more than a few trashed up camp sites now too judging from some reports that have come back in the last few weeks.

Im hoping to come down, but it will only be for Sat if at all. Is there a plan yet: times etc?

You should've let me know that. That's my neck of the woods, I'm only 20 minutes from Roanoke.

:D Tell your lazy trailer queen to drive by herself; she anyhow has to be street legal to hit those trails ;)

What tow rig do you have? Would a gravel road be OK for your tow and trailer? I think there is a place to park where the ATV trails start, at the beginning of Second Mountain. It's a graded gravel road that goes up there. Probably Frisckey1 would know better whether if it's OK to leave a trailer there for a couple of hours or not.

As Steve said, Campground would be OK or, if you stay in a motel, I don't think the motel manager would mind, which just would be a 15 or so mile drive to the trails. As I just mentioned above, your rig anyhow should be road legal because we use regular roads between the trails and also the trails themselves are on public ground.

Well it is legal and all as far as laws except for the fact that I don;t have tags and insurance on it. I just got a 99 Tahoe as my daily driver, and took the Explorer off the road for a while so I can get some work done to it and not have to pay for it to sit. So I will be pulling her with that. I honstly don't trust the explorer to go on such a long drive since I still havn't worked all the bugs out of the new front end yet. I guess I would be fine if I could park the Tahoe somewhere close and make a quick ride over to the trails, what do you guys think?? Or I could ride between 2 of yall in a convoy so the cops can't see I don;t have tags??

On a good note, I got my drop pitman arm, sway bar bushing, sway bar disconnects, and manual t-case installed today. The only thing is now I have to wait for my shift linkages for the tcase so I can get the case out of neutral and out of the garage. So hopefully Ford will have them for me this week.... I have only been waiting for 2.5 months for them!

Anyway time to shower up,
Chris

I'll check into it SteveVB. There is a place we call the saltshack right off Rt. 33 that has a pretty large area that could hold a trailer. Its the start of a trailhead. I don't know how safe it would be if you wanted to leave your trailer there for the weekend. Regardless, I will look into it for ya.

I have a question that's a little different than what's being discussed right now...What's it like up there? What kind of difficulty are we talking? Is this a lot of rock climbing, or more trail and fire road kind of stuff? Does anyone have any pictures from GWNF?

just find the link here: GWNF

Happy trails!!

Thanks, that looks just about perfect for my truck as it is now. Can't wait to get up there.

Yes, that picture was taken about three weeks ago at obx. If you've ever been down there, you know there is a beach access right at the oregon inlet before you go over the bridge to Hatteras Island. It was a perfect day, and that sand is fun!
