I'm wondering if anyone has installed or used a remote start add on for the OEM keyless entry. I figure, I have remote lock/unlock in my Ranger, why add a whole new keyless enty/alarm/remote start just to get remote start, if I can buy an add on kit? I found one here and here (Ebay link) and for the price, is not bad. I also have a friend who started at a Ford dealership today, so I asked him to check on a Ford OEM remote start add on once he gets settled in there. Any thoughts?

I had a remote start on Shamrock, that annoyed the hell out of me. It had it's own fob, and worked fine, but I couldn't disable the stupid autolock. Make sure your new kit can do that if you don't like it. The OEM kit is a nice clean unit though if it can be retro'd back to a '96...

Basically you connect the unit to the starter wire, and to the lock button wire, then you hit lock twice and it starts the truck, since you have a 96 I don't think you have PATS to worry about

I have been looking at the 4003 and the 4113. I have a couple of questions. I have a toyota camry with the FOB integrated into the key. I don't want another remote. What happens in the camry, is after the car is started the fob is disabled.

Can you start you car by hitting the lock button 3 times, and then when you go to get in the car does the fob work to unlock the door or do you have to use the key?
Did your car disable the fob when the ignition was on?

Does the 4113 have the option to send a signal to defrosters to turn those on upon remote start?

Joe

Let me ask you a question. What kind of range does your factory key fob have? If I had a remote start on my factory fobs it would be pointless. If I needed to be that close to the truck to start it I might as well reach in and turn the key. This is why as of Sunday morning I will have an Auto Page C3-RS-665-2W installed.

I don't live in the woods or under a rock.

The range on my remote is 100 ft. Therefore I would be able to remote start the car from anywhere in my home as my car is never more than 100ft from me. All I need it for is cold mornings, other than that you are right, just stick the key in the car and turn the key.

However, it would be nice to not have to run outside turn the car on lock it and go back inside and wait 10 minutes for it to defrost the windows.

anyway i was quoted 300 plus tax for this. i will just be cold. i like money more.

i bought a remote start kit for about $40.00 at walmart it was a bulldog security one. i downloaded the explorer wiring diagram from their site and installed everything with the directions only problem was that my anti theft system was a transponder and i needed and extra key so i could turn it on from the inside but now i just leave the key in the ignition and lock and open with the keypad when i know its going to be cold. its really easy if u follow the direction word for word thought this might help my fellow explorers

Bringing this thread back!

I have a 2002 and I'd like to add a remote start, factory if possible or whatever works easy and cheap.

How do you get around this PATS system? What is needed to make it work?

There is no factory remote starter, but you can get a Ford branded system (Code Alarm) the gold one has the remote start, for the PATS you will need to add the module, you need 2 original keys to program it

Just purchased a viper 5901 for this and the aux to turn off my electric fan when I am in the house and too lazy to walk all the way back into the garage. Also, when I leave it on for an extra few min. in a parking lot. That 1-mile range should be pretty handy.

I ended up finding a Bulldog model RS102 in our storage area, and I'm wondering if there is any way to integrate that into the use of the original remote - if not, an extra remote isn't a big deal in the winter, just curious at this point. Thanks!

It not a big deal. I've had a remote start on my 99 Mounty since shortly after I bought it new. Since then I have put one on several Ford vehicles w/PATS without any issues. The one on the Mounty I had installed because the truck was brand new and I was scaredy to do it my self. I've since installed 3 more on different vehicles. There is a bypass module needed for PATS equipped vehicles and it needs a programmed key to work. However you can program it yourself if you have 2 keys already. It doesn't even need to be cut. I bought an uncut unprogrammed key from the dealer and programmed it myself. It's not hard at all really. If you by a quality kit you should have no problems. The price is only dependent on how many bells and whistles you want. The last one I put in was a remote start and tied into my keyless entry and I think it was around $80.

Leaving a programed key in the vehicle might be against your insurance policy, so for a few extra bucks, buy a bypass module that doesn't require a key in it

I had looked into that myself because I had the same concern. They told me if the key wasn't cut it could not be used to start the car so it was fine. They told me that someone could use a bypass module to "bypass" security just as well as a spare key that was not cut. I would still check with your insurance co. but I don't think it will be a problem.

Ended up putting in the Bulldog RS102 over the course of the last few nights (starter portion one night, lock/unlock/lights the next). Works fine using the Bulldog keyfob, and it'll be fine for what I need for the winter months. It definitely has a better range than the stock remote - works through walls, etc., whereas with the stock remote I had to be direct line of sight and fairly close to the truck for it to work.

One of the units I installed was a bulldog, they work great. Glad it worked out for you, you'll love the convenience.

Isn't the bypass module only "live" when you activate the RS? the key either cut or not, will always be "live" AFAIK...

I've seen the bulldogs, but never tried them, so I can't comment on those :)

Yeah the key is always live, but it wont work unless it's "in" the ignition. You can put in over, under, around, it wont work. The transponder in the key has to be inside the pick up ring to be read. So if they do find the key(my bypass module is very well hidden) its useless.
