has anyone tried a tune to save gas on a v6?

I just went down from 265's to 235's and went from 13 mpg to 18 mpg o.O

Exactly :) I am pretty sure that having the right gearing for the tires on these vehicles is very important to mileage. I expect to see an improvement when I get my 4:10's put in here soon.

what about hydrogen cells? does it really works?

hmmm....saving on gas? Oh well I bought a V8! I get around 14-16 city right now...18-19 highway... Like stated before adjust your driving habits will do alot.

One thing i did for my truck was to change the fuel filter, and even in city driving, my Mileage has changed Alot! I was pushing 10.3 ( freakin crazy ) and now im up to 11.0-12.0, and i know with highway driving its going to be better.

I plan on changing the fuel filter out in the next few days. I currently get 14.5mpg (based on the fill/drive/fill method). So I hope I will see a gain, probably not a ton of gain but, a gain is a gain. My question is, has anyone ever ran copper spark plugs on the V6? I hear they burn the fuel better and allow better all around performance for the engine they are installed in. Bad points would be they are not as cheap as the normal ones and the replacement cycle is a lot shorter.

If you get 14.5 then its definitely going to increase, but I'm not sure about the spark plugs tho, sorry I can't help you out there man :(

I got 20 mpg (hwy) after using James Henson tunes, I was getting 17, so for me it was just a lucky bonus.:D

Wow, that's good mileage, is that a V6 engine?

There has got to be a way to get better mileage. I have owned my 2003 Explorer since it had 7k on the OD it now has 94k. When I purchased it 18/22mpg consistantly now 16/19mpg. I took a trip last summer Grand Teton/Yellowstone National parks, mpg average for the whole trip 23mpg. I kept track wanted to know how much fuel was going to cost. On one of our day trips from Jackson Hole to Old Faithfull and back 8am to 7pm, starting, stopping, sight seeing, up and down hills, AC on, speed through the parks 45mph. My X got 25mpg from the station we filled up at 8am to when we filled up again same station 7pm. We traveled 367 miles used 14.6 gallons of gas(10% ethenol), amazing to me. I have figured out why, it was altitude. From the time we entered Idaho we were almost always above 3000' above sea level, the vehicle adjusts for altitude(thinner air, MAF adjusts mixture to allow more air) and runs better at higher altitude National parks 6000'-11,000'. My mom lives East of Boise, ID at about 3500' every time I visit her I average over 21mpg that includes 75mph on Idaho highways. If someone can figure out a way to trick/tune the MAF to allow a leaner mixture sea level-2000' Alt. our Explorers can get much better mileage.

If anyone wants to know stock explorer, tires 245/75/r16. Forgot to mention we were loaded down for a two week vacation 2 adults, one 14 year old, and an ankle bitter named Molly.

mpg update

ok... here is an update.

so I started using the fill/drive/record/fill/drive/record method.
I returned my my ecu to stock suing my xcallII, the try to cruse/coast on downhill, trying not to exceed 2000rpm on take offs or other... doing about 40%/60% city/hwy, trying not to go over 70mph...

first run: I got 321.6 miles and refilled 19.310 gallons = 16.654 mpg
second run: I got 299.5 miles and refill 16.581 gallons = 18.03 mpg...

Today I removed the roof-racks (left the screws in to cover the holes), installed an 89 oct tune (performance) and changed my oil to mobil1 syn...

Just waiting to see what results that give me on the next fulling.

I tried to change the atf to synthetic but could not because the truck requires 13quarts (is this correct?) and each quart is about 12 (synt) plus the filter...

I have installed under/over drive pulleys on my engine and installed an electric fan. I can easily get 24mpg on the highway. See the links in my signature for more information about my modifications.

Sounds like a good start. When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? Some people have said that really helps when you notice your fuel economy dropping for no apparent reason.

Since i started at the lube shop, I've done all the gas mileage stuff I could think of and am getting noticeably better mpg. Changing to a synthetic oil is a good idea...keeps things clean...I personally use a high mileage oil, run a cleaner through the oil system (or atf) and an engine treatment yearly. If you don't think you will clean your k&n at proper intervals at least change your paper filter regularly....you would be surprised how many people don't or think they can just shake it out. Seafoam or some kind of injector cleaner is great too but try finding a vaccuum a little closer to the throttle and use brake booster as a last resort. I changed my fuel filter too but more to save my fuel pump than mpg....and try not to do 5 or 10 dollar gas adds and keep that fuel pump submerged. Also keep tire pressure up and consider switching to nitrogen so they hold pressure longer.
