96 ford explorer
hello all
I have a 96 ford explorer with 4x4 4.0l with a 4r44e trans with 251000 miles. the other day i lost most of my forward gears. if i hold it in first after about 45 sec it will inguage but if i give it gas and it slips i was reading on here how the torque converter could be the problem. i have noise coming from the t/c area. could this be the cause. i have reverse but a major delay before it goes in but no slipping please help

that many miles...a major overhaul or replace it. either way, I would replace the torque converter. a new converter is relatively inexpensive insurance.

I'd probably check pressure readings and then yank the VB. Could be just a blown gasket or something. If there are chunks in the pan that will give you some idea of the state of your transmission. Did you check the fluid level?

had it open not to long ago maybe 3 months. did band adjustment, filter and gaskit getting ready to rebuild myself. new t/c, new v/b and master rebuild kit.

Ah. Could try a rebuilt VB. Might get you through another year... who knows. If it doesn't, rebuild the trans.

i have looked on ebay i can pick up a vb for 180 or so

that is quite a bit more. i just took it to the store as my wife took our tundra to work. had first gear if i pulled it down to it.but 2nd 3rd and od all slipped could it be possible that its a broken band. the facts r i just need it for 2 months then i will rebuild the whole thing also when i started it there was a rattly sound till it warmed up. was reading thought it might be t/c

You can check to see if you can adjust the bands. If you can then they aren't broken.

If I were you I would do the following in that sequence:
1-adjust bands
2-replace VB gaskets and fluid/filter
3-rebuild VB

If that doesn't do it you will have a newly rebuilt VB to install in your transmission when you rebuild it.

thank you for all your advice i will going at this next week i will keep you informed

so i just bought another explorer instead of fixing mine that is for the meantime
