hey all,
the local kragen has the haynes manual (36024) for '91-'00 X's on sale. i've seen it referenced a couple times in various threads and i was wondering what you all thought of it. is it a good reference to have for anyone intersted in DIY maintenance? also does it list specific part numbers for each model Explorer listed?

thanks,
RaginRaj

i just got one, and i'm not extremely happy with it. it does give you some good general advise, such as where certain sensor "might be" located. however, i already found a few mistakes in it that have caused me some grief. no part #s, either.

The Haynes manual is an awesome guide to DYI repairs, like most periodicals there are good and bad points, but actually I am so devoted to the Explorer, I keep the manual in the bathroom for reading, I have read it almost front to back several times...I will continue to read it as well....the one great thing about it is that in the beginning of each chapter, they list all of the specs on torque for the various parts....great job I think,.....

It's a good starting point for routine maintenance, but for anything beyond simple repairs I'd have something more detailed available. Many people have gotten the Ford service CD's off ebay.

Haynes.

You cannot go wrong with Haynes, I have made it a point to have one for every car I have had over the years- even if you do a job only once using Haynes, it would have paid for itself.

A brilliant source of information- Get it mate, and have the knowledge!

Haynes is good. Sometimes hard to follow, but is a great help when you have no idea where to start. Chilton's is the same way.

I like the Haynes a lot. Is it perfect? No, but it does have most everything you need to do maintenance at home. The only thing it is short on is wiring diagrams and details of the insides of the tranny and xfer case. Other than that it's pretty complete. Definitely worth the $$

great, thanks for all the info so far guys. for less than $15 i figure it'll be cool to have around.

does anyone think the chilton's manual is better in any way?

Actually, I have both Chiltons and Haynes manuals, and I prefer the Haynes.

The problem with the Chilton manual for Explorers is that it has all the Ranger stuff in it too, which is why I prefer the Haynes manual personally.

The CD bombs! It said it has all information to do anything to the truck, but didn't show anything inside the M5OD. I wanted it so I could attempt to fix my overdrive, but oh well.

I could have said it was ebay misrepresentation :thumbdwn:

The problem I find with shop manuals, is the range of years they cover...For example, you staed the one for sale is the 91-00.

That means most of the pictures will be older models with the little caption "newer models typical"

I lucked out when finding my manual, I got the haynes one from 95, when 99% of the information was ONLY for the first gen....

I know of at least 3 different versions for the Haynes ones....

91-92
91-95
91-00

My haynes is 91-01.

There are so many....

At some point between 95 and 99, they changed the cover from a green back with a First gen drawing, to one with a cut away Second gen...take a look...

In this case, If you had a first gen, you would want the green one from 95, since it is not watered down with second gen stuff.....

I have the 91-92 haynes and it is well worth the $14 I spent on it. Some sections are more highly detailed than others, but I have found it too be exceptional. The link below will help you locate the manual from a variety of sources.
