I'm wanting to get a repair manual for my 96 Explorer XL 4x4. Which is the best manual....Haynes or Chiltons? They could be about the same for all I know.

Thanks,
Steve

I prefer the Haynes...

Just download the ford cd as brooklynbay said

Much more detail that either paper manual.

the CD i have is real technical. i would prefer a book, its little bit easier to deal with.

You can find the ford factory repair dvd on a bittorrent download site for free and they explain step by step like the repair manuals and also includes specific information about recalls and common customer complaints. I have found it helpful.

I like the download idea. personally, I have found both chilton's and hanes to be equally worthless. Do they still make the old motor's manuals? those used to be the best.

I have both but unfortunately I prefer the Chiltons :D.
LOL I have to be the odd one in the crowd!

you know i like the write ups in chiltons, and they have way more and better pictures, but the i love haynes torque spec sections way better. so i'm conflicted i got 3 chiltons and 3 haynes for all the family cars and friend cars i work on so yeah haha

How does that ford dvd work? I downloaded it but i just got a bunch of files that wont open...i downloaded the 96-99

EDIT: Nevermind, i found out why....now it says cant find volume 96-99 service
