Joe Doe - how many miles do you have on your truck? I have 225K do you think its beyond just head gaskets?

Don't junkyards guarantee their engines to be good? A compression and leak-down test would give you a good idea of what kind of condition it is in. If you put a JY engine in you will still change all the fluids, thermostat, plugs and wires... if you get one with LOW MILES it may be your best bet. How much for a used engine?

At 225K with coolant issues, I wouldn't risk further issues with that motor. Find one that has low miles and a guarantee and keep the oil changed and clean. It's cheap insurance.

Typically they warranty the engine for at least 30 days, in some cases 90 days.

I would deff go the JY route, or as suggested by another poster...Purchase a nicer truck for $4500, sell yours for maybe $500-$1000 and be ahead of the game.

4K+ for a jasper engine swap...rly???

I paid $4,159 (incl. tax, tags, title) two months ago for my 2001 Eddie Bauer V8 with 103K on the clock.

Well the deed is done. New gaskets and spark plugs. Heads came back with no cracks. Interesting though that there were three different types of spark plugs in the motor. Mechanic thinks the engine might not be the original and everything was cleaner that what he thought a 225K engine would look like.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I should pick it up in the morning.
