- 1996 4.0L Explorer
I have a 1996 Explorer 4.0 Eddie Bauer 4 door that seems to be having some sort of an electrical issue.
Usually when the explorer sits for an extended period of time usually 6-8 hours I will start it up and turn the headlights on. When I do this normally the fog light switch indicator light will illuminate letting me know the fog lights are on. A few weeks ago I started noticing that the light wasn't coming on so I figured the light had burned out but it didn't I got out of the truck and looked to see that I only had one head light on (drivers side) and no fog lights so I started heading towards the fuse panel and before I could reach it the passenger headlight came on as did the fog lights including the indicator light.
This is a reoccurring problem but sporadic to say the least. Every time I attempt to look into the problem further the lights come on and I have no means to replicate it in order to find the actual problem.
Some things I have done, noticed and learned while this is going on are that I see from a Haynes manual that the passenger side headlamp and fog lights are tied together from the same 10 amp fuse located inside the fuse panel on the inside of the explorer by the drivers door, I replaced this fuse on a hope and a prayer but the problem remains. The high beam in the passenger headlight still works even when the low beam does not. When the problem does present itself it will usually start working within 5-10 minutes of idling or driving but not always.
That's about all the information I can think to offer at this point and time. Any help that could be given would be greatly appreciated, I have a hard enough time seeing at night with the two headlights let alone just one so I would like to get the fixed so I am not endangering other people on the road.
