Hi, I'm from Illinois and I was looking into getting hte GTS headlight covers for my 1993 Explorer Sport.

Only problem is that I'm not sure if they are legal. I was wondering if anyone knew if they were legal in Illinois, or knew of a place I could call, or a site I could check out that would tell me this information. I sure don't want to be pulled over due to the fact I have these covers.

Thanks..

I'd like to start off be giving you a hand in welcoming you to the site. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here as much as I do.

As for your question......I'm about 95% sure you'll be ok. I can't see a problem being arouse just cause you put some dark plastic on your lights. I would double check though. Just call up the DMV or HP and they'll answer your question or give you the number to someone who can.

btw....what part of Ill. are you from anyways???

I'm from the Northwest Suburbs, Bartlett which is right near Elgin. Thanks for the greet and info too!

Quick,

I, too, am from Illinois and yes, technically, headlight and tail light covers are illegal. Although, the chances of you getting pulled over for them are slim to none. Just don't get pulled over for anything else because the cop may decide to stick you with the extra tickets. My buddy had front and rear black outs on his Camaro RS, they looked badass, but he did get a ticket for them (he later got out of the ticket because the cop was an ass though).

you got to be kidding me???? you mean they are illegal??? Did he look into that law to see if the cop was just being an a@@ or just took his word saying they were illegal. I'd like to find out the answer now myself just to kill the cat.

I know they're illegal in TX because with them, the light emitted falls below the state minimum. If you get a ticket with them during the day, you can fight it (they're legal if you're not using your lights). But if you get a ticket at night, the cop wins.

I can't say whether they're legal or not here in Illinois...But I know the cops here in Wheaton didn't care...Quick...Not too far from ya....Check the Attack on Attica II thread...we;re makin a run next weekend!
Hope that helps
Pete

They are definitely illegal. I tried to fight a ticket in court and they read the law straight from the books. Something about "decreases visibility" or something like that. Got the ticket only after I got caught speeding. So I am sure that they won't pull you over for just the covers it will just be an add-on. My friends dad is a Chicago cop and he only gives warnings. Anyway cops in Chicago (anyways in my neighbor) barely pull people over.

Looks like I'll be checking my local police department.

Yeah, Wheaton is very close. I work in Wheaton at a store called Beepers in the Burbs. :)
