headliners

Is it easy to remove the headliner. I never thought about recovering the headliner. That camouflaged fabric looked great gave me some ideas..

My 92 Ex had the fiberglass board, so I'm not sure what your second gen has.

What I did was use a wire wheel attachment on a drill and very slowly and cautiously grind the foam off. It worked well for me and the suede headliner I put in is still holding up well. This was only last year, so time will tell how it holds up.

Starting to grind away:

this board is very very fragile!

All done:

You can see I burned through in a few spots with the wire wheel, but the suede material with foam backing is somewhat forgiving and it isn't noticeable.

New material laid on:

Material glued/stretched/shaped on:

From there I cut out holes, pulled the material back and glued the edges down.

I'm very satisfied with how mine came out!

Which Type of Board?

Which type of board-back do I have? The fiberglass (not serviceable), or the fiber (maybe serviceable)?

Looks like Fiberglass, same material I have. It is serviceable but with caution.

I also have a 92 ford explorer, XLT with sunroof and it is also missing its headliner board. Anyone know of a source for replacement? If not that, anyone know what years headliners will fit my 92 configuration? Thanks!

I had a marine carpet shop re do mine. Cost me $160. They took it out & recovered it with a matching fabric. Came out very nice.
Any pics? That would be great 👍🏾 to see it.

Jason posted that in 2012.......lets see if he comes back 8 years later to answer!
@Jason94sport, "is this thing on?"

Quite a few how to cover your headliner videos on Youtube these days

Yeah I'm still here...LOL
I don't own that X any longer. It was a headliner. Nothing special. They did use some thicker material that held much better then the thin junk Ford used.
