Good morning all....
Just bought a used 92 Explorer XL..Great shape on the body. Came with a Rancho lift, shocks...Was owned by an older guy (only owner), 162k miles, spotless interior (almost new), exterior in good shape as well.
So here is where it get interesting. I intend to make this my daily driver. I paid 2500.00 for it, may seem like a lot to some, but this truck is in really great shape for it's age. I would like to restore it to as close to new condition as possible and continue to drive it for a number of years.
The engine is of course the 4.0 OHV original engine. It has the usual timing chain noise that disappears after it warms up, I can smell oil and there are traces of oil all over the engine, the upper and lower ball joints need replacing, and the transmission is relatively new-it was replaced.
The shop I normally use quoted me about 9 hours labor to replace the front and rear timing chains and hardware to the tune of 1k. The ball joints are something I can take care of myself as well as other odds and ends.
Question is: should I just drive the truck as is and save for a new remanned engine that has all the timing issues fixed from the get go, build up the transmission a bit to make it last? Or spend the money on the timing chain issue and work on the oil leak issues until solved, ie new gaskets, rear main, etc.?
Feedback and opinions would be appreciated..
