96' XLT
Hi everyone, ok so i have a 96' Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 4.0L V6. Automatic.

Just recently i had been having problems with extended shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear,
also the O/D light starts flashing after a few miles of driving regularly.

After searching online and seeing it could be trans trouble, i decided to buy a OBD II PocketScan.

and i receive the code (P0756 Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stock Off)

My question is where can i find the solenoid block/pack for sale? a dealer? (Ebay came up with nothing) I would like to buy the solenoid pack BEFORE draining system, changing filter, and testing solenoids and any info or tips you have would be greatly appreciated! ...Or is this a bad game plan?

P.S. the O2 sensor code (P0136 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 2))comes up as well, i am aware that it is near the Cat, but is this a hard sensor to get at or replace?

Im new here and not sure if you need more info but pls reply if i am missing something important and if you have any knowledge as what i am to do and thank you very much!

267,000 Miles on Odometer, not sure how many on the tranny.

wow 276K miles! awesome

Bank 1 sensor 2 is the catalyst monitor, and the code is a circuit malfunction

Usually this means the sensor has failed OR you have a wiring issue

the transmission shift solenoids and 2/3 of the 02 sensors share one thing in common, they share the same wiring harness from the computer all the way to the transmission

because your solenoid and 02 sensor codes are both circuit malfunctions I would seriously check the wiring before I replace any parts...these wires run close to exhaust in several locations and also moving parts (shift linkage, driveshaft) so an inspection OR a simple wiring test from computer pinout to transmission/02 sensor may be in order

96 is a GREAT year for the exploder....

sorry your post got missed, sometimes you may try bumping it a bit, you posted at 10:30 pm = the next morning when people log in its pushed back about 400 posts.......these can get skipped

You can either PM a moderator of the threads section and make them aware you are looking for help, or bump your thread until somebody takes notice :)

I have like 30 bazillion posts and even some of my question threads get buried and forgotten, its the nature of these forums, not discrimination! all of us are here to try and help, for love of the hobby

Thank you

Your info is greatly appreciated. :biggthump Now as for more detail about the codes, I have a "break" in the exhaust right after the cat and between the muffler. Not sure what it's called but its a where the pipe after the cat meets the muffler. If needed i could post a pic. but could this cause the 02 code to be thrown as well? (even if it is a circuit mal###tion) As for the solenoid Im def willing to try your advise and check harness and wiring but going about that im unclear as to how.

I love the 96's!

and yea 267k is pretty amazing to believe myself!, no major repairs except alt at 200k.

I completely understand your relevance with the 400 plus posts you "have to" reply to and i have empathy for that! haha :notworthy

I've just checked the wiring harness to trans and 02 sensors, there seems to be no corrosion or disconnection to trans as far as i can see. The 02 after the cat definitely needs replacement because its all burned out and was actually coming out of the threads partially. as far as
an inspection OR a simple wiring test from computer pinout to transmission/02 sensor may be in order
Im a little new to that, would i simply use a voltmeter or ohm's reader to do such a task? Just after reading many posts and 2-3 shift flare issues on this site i assumed it could be the 2 shift solenoid or TCC gone bad.

Thanks for the replies.

okay well yes the hole in your exhaust will cause your downstream 02 sensor to throw a code, but it would be a catalyst monitor code saying out of range, rich or lean, etc

Your code tends to point to a faulty 02 sensor, and as you say it is falling out of its mount and you have a hole in your exhaust, it may indeed be time to replace that 02 sensor

If I am not mistaken your truck has 3ea 02 sensors, 2 upstream and 1 aft the cat
the 3rd 02 sensor (sensor 2)is simply a cat monitor, it does not send info to the computer to adjust fuel/timing curves all it does is say YES or NO the catalyst is functioning

SO
you can buy a new 02 sensor, BUT install it as one of your upstream sensors and use the old upstream sensor as your new catalyst
Just a little trick to help save $$$ in the long run (old upstream sensors work great as new downstream sensors)

Your 96 auto transmission is known for having shift solenoid issues, which your other code is pointing you to

The only reason I suggested the wiring is because had both of these codes.
Knowing there is a hole in your exhaust and the downstream sensor is already in physically bad shape, I would say it may be time to go inside your transmission

Dont fret! I swapped the shift solenoids in my V8 trans a few months ago, it took an hour and was really simple

and yes a simple multimeter can test the wiring, its simple really.
Just test continuity between the wire at the transmission and at the computer plug, you just have to identify the correct pin for each wire at the computer
I used some aligator clips and tested all 20 something wires that go from my transmission to my computer, eventually I found my short! it only cost me a rebuilt transmission LOL (running in limp mode for 2 years! hahahaha whew.... okay not funny)

my 88 BII has 300K miles, I am on trans #7 and engine #4 by CHOICE believe it or not LOL

Alright great tips on the 02's, im getting anxious to get er done.

For the trans, i've been inside it before with filter changes and so on, but nothing this extreme, although you do make it sound easy but with the experts on this site hey, everything other than complete engine overhaul makes my issue seem as easy picking a fruit fly out of your bowl of pea soup!

With that said, i've never pulled a solenoid. I am semi-familiar with whats what as far as TCC and ECP and Im sure that all the solenoids can be swapped except those two.

My question is; Can they can just be "pulled" out? Or will i need to drop the VB?

Hopefully i won't come to the same conclusion after testing and end up needing a rebuild tranny as you have! *Crosses fingers* Im already running it in limp mode for now. :(

BTW I must say your 88 BII is excuse my language but it is f*cking fresh!
I've always wanted a bronco! Some about it just says...bad ass. cliche i know lol

:biggthump:thanks for the tips guys! For now thats the only questions i have. Greatly appreciated. I do need to buy some gator clips though.

LOL I only blew up my transmission because I stuffed a V8 into my Bronco and when I did I screwed up one solder (actually the heat shrink on that solder) out of 160+ solders! LOL The code I was getting I mis read based on some false info I had at the time, so I drove it for two years in LIMP mode. I thought it shifted hard for a stockish trans, but I figured my trans builder did me a favor (hes good).
I drove to Moab, wheeled the piss out of the truck, drove it daily, for almost two years before I finally couldnt drive anymore and knew it was now not the t case as I thought :)

yup full rebuild = $1800 mistake
took me 2 days to find my wiring problem, I am lucky my PCM is under my kick panel, so with no carpet or floor shifter, its a 3' jump from trans harness to computer.... for you its a bit more tricky :)

Solenoids are a known issue on your trans though, so I would try that before looking for wiring issues.
If the wires around your trans look good, no melting, chaffing, looseness then its likely jsut wear and tear

thanks for the compliments, I have been building this truck for like 15 years now
shes about to go through some major changes (think less metal more tube)

No probs about the comments, i think you've put in the effort and time and its an impressive truck so a few compliments are due. Keep up the great work, She's a buet!

I highly doubt the solenoid is stuck or there is wiring issue .. this code is given when the slow shift occurs.

I bet you have a busted OD band , if you drop your transmission pan you will probably find parts floating around.

its been two months, we may never know
