I have a 1996 2 Door Explorer. Where the muffler and the tail pipe meet, they have rusted apart. I need to find a replacement muffler, but am unsure of my options. I have removed the bolts from the flange, so the tail pipe and muffler are already removed from the vehicle.

What are some options for us 2 door guys? I have hunted down different junk yards, but everything is either 4 door, or missing. It looks like the shops are wanting ~200$ to do the job. Aftermarket? How would I meet the bends/ support the weight of the exhaust system? Is clamping a system together okay?

I have searched the forum and found nothing pertaining the 2 door models. If anyone knows of any other threads I could benefit from, please post.

Help!

the 96 sport has a couple of different systems, duel input with a resonator seems to be the most common and as Murphy's law would have it, not what I have. The real problem is that the distance between the cat and the muffler is very small, like 7", and it that 7" there is an offset to get the two flanges to meet. I know I could cut ahead of the cat, and shift it forward, then piece in the muffler, if I can find one with the right mounts. I just don't want to do this in a micky mouse manner...

i have actually been recently been thinkin about that. i have the dual from cats into a single out muffler(stock then into resonator), i was thinkin bout cuttin it off before muffler and welding in Y-pipe then a muffler of my choice then just continuing it on w/stock tailpipe.

i have a four door x and have the dual in to single out setup and when my muffler went i replaced it with two super 44's one on each existing pipe then ran two tailpipes out the back. now my friend with a two door x tried to go for the same setup as he had the same original as me but didnt have enough room for two mufflers so he welded together a y pipe and put on a single in single out super 40 and kept off the resonator. he didnt believe me that cabin drone in the 2 doors without a resonator is god awful. so for your sake keep the resonator or even better get a flo pro resonator(my same friend just got one) it turns down cabin drone and does not affect outside tone much at all. id also imagine youd be able to run the same setup as i explained.
