2001 Sport Trac
Hi Everybody,

My brother has a 2001 Sport Trac and just told me that the dealer quoted him $1700 for parts and labor because his differential is "about to go".

Can anyone tell me what that means and if that price seems even close to correct??

Thanks so much

Rachel

for $1700 you could have about 4 complete drum brake 8.8 31 spline rear ends

dealership = stealership, seriously

What is about to go?
the pinion?
even with all new gears, a new limited slip, new e brake hardware, new drum brake shoes, turning the drums, new drum hardware, new bearings and seals it still wouldnt come to $1700 UNLESS YOU ARE AT A DEALERSHIP

My mom took her 04 Touareg in for brakes, because at 47000 miles the "check brake pads" light was coming on at times
Dealership wanted $2600 for brakes

yes $2600
they dont turn rotors, only replace with new
$1000 for 4 rotors
$600 for labor
$1000 for pads and everything else
everything else = brake fluid and washer fluid

I am dead serious

I did her brakes for $85, light is now off and her windshield wiper fluid is topped off

dealership = stealership

if it sounds horrific, guess what it most likely IS!!

Ask them to SHOW YOU what exactly is "goingout" on a lift
My guess is either a $8 u joint or a $20 pinion seal

uhh, that's a little rediculous lol.
Front/rear? What is the problem?
Used front diff is about $100, plus around 200 if someone else installs it.
Rear is similar...

Welcome Rachel, and ditto what's been said. Go somewhere else, have the fluid changed if it isn't clear what is wrong with it. The fluid change(synthetic) should cost less than $50 total. Regards,

But neither one is really difficult to install. I'm no mechanic, but I've replaced both front and rear axles on my own.

The differential is the big item to avoid servicing, and that usually outlasts the vehicle with proper fluid.

An honest mechanic in los angeles/

Thanks everyone. you've confirmed my suspicions re: the 1700 dollar dealer quote.
Now I'm on the hunt for an 'honest' mechanic.
I'm in Los Angeles, if anybody out there has a referral, I'd be so grateful.

Explorer past 96 = D35 front diff, Ford 8.8 rear end and dime a dozen parts at the wrecker. $1700 is absolutely ridiculous. I've had my rear diff apart in my driveway more thane once. I did not see anything close to $1700 worth of anything in there!!!

like i just posted in the other thread my rear end rebuild from ford was $1800 with labor
900 parts, 900 labor

good news!

Made an appt. with an independent shop, rear end specialist.
A bit over $600 -- for the same work the dealer wanted to do.

Thanks you guys for your help!

Rachel

Excellent news Rachel.

BTW, did you find out exactly what was wrong with the axle?

Yes, try and find out like Johnstone just said. Because even though $600 is ALOT cheaper, it may still be too high.

here's the deal...

:p: this is they want to put in:

1 new ring and pinion
2 axel bearings and seals

1 pinion seal
1 crush sleeve
2 pinion bearings
2 carrier bearings

plus labor.

what do you think?
Rachel

600 is a great price for new gears and install, you may consider having the e brake hardware also replaced ($40 at Napa) and your factory limited slip (if you have one) can be rebuilt by them for $100 or so if you are interested in a re-fresh for that

Wow!

Seems like they replaced everything inside the axle except the axle shafts.

How many miles on the truck? Has your brother been really hard on the truck?
Our trucks come with pretty stout axles. You have to be pretty hard on them to damage them.

Not many miles, actually, considering it's an '01.
62K, city driving and freeways in Los Angeles.
And he's really not very hard on the truck.
Hmmmm.
Anyway, they finished the work. We just picked it up and it's purring like a dream. Knock wood...
Thanks again, you guys.
Rachel

Very good, hopefully that is what was needed, and it'll last for ten years or more.

Fair price. Four years ago I paid 2,000 and I trust our local ford dealer.

This thread has been dead and buried for five years, I'm geussing his brother probably has had it fixed by now. LOL
