Hello everyone, I am not very knowledgeable about mechanics so I was hoping I could get an opinion from someone here. I've read around the internet but figure that some of the articles are so outdated that asking personally would yield the best results today.

I just bought a used 2005 explorer xlt with a stock radio that has no cd changer and no auxillary port to speak of. I would very much like to connect my iphone to the car somehow so i can use my sirius app through my cars speakers. If I had to, I would just buy a new radio with the capability already included but that is a last resort unless its cheaper than the alternatives. A FM transmitter is also not an option. They are terrible.

All assistance is appreciated and please forgive my lack of knowledge in this department. Im hoping this can be done reasonably easy and without much deconstruction of the dash itself. I am not handy!

Thanks so much'
Ryan

I know you said buying one is a last resort but that's pretty much the best option and definitely more convienent. Plus an aftermarket radio will make all your speakers sound better.

I have a pie adapter box that you hard wire in the back of the radio, giving you a a place to hook up a line in/aux input. I think its the pie frdn. I paid $70 for it new, you can have it for $20+shipping

I'm not sure what that is but can you explain it a
Bit better? Where does the aux hole appear in the dash? If this is a viable option, I may be interested

It is a box about the size of a pack of cigarettes, is it hard wires into the wire harness behind your radio. It gives you an 1/8" jack to plug in an auxiliary cable for MP3 player iPhone etc.

the 1/8" jack wire comes from the "cigarette sized box" at the back of the radio and you can run it anywhere you want to (ie. glove box, center console, or just under the radio bezel)

Ok, well if everyone else thinks this is a viable option than thank you and I will take it. Just tell me a total and method of payment and I will have it taken care of in a day or so. I actually am busy the next few days but shouldn't be a problem. Thanks

The part is a Precision Interface Electronics (PIE) FRDN-AUX, and they can be had on amazon for $60-$70.... You may also want to try and track down a wiring harness adapter to hook it up. BestBuy can help you with that for around $25.

Wiring harness adapter?

in my CVPI I installed JVC KD-X40 Digital media receiver AM/FM, 2xUSB, bluetooth and AUX bought it form crutchfield and I really love it

and with In-dash Receiver Kit it will give you neat stock looking.

this is the kit for 2005 explorer

also with Receiver Wire Harness you do not need to splice the stock harness

It allows you to splice in the PIE adapter without tapping into any of the wires in your stock harness....

Something like this: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item...oogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=froogle

Interesting. The pie adapter I have has a 12 pin (I think) connector that plugs in the factory cd changer port and then all I had to do was tap into the 12v constant power wire on the stock harness and it worked great. Might be different for 04 and 05

I had a 20-pin & 16-pin on mine....

After reading through this thread I really think you should just get the radio. So much simpler than all this wire splicing. Its doable but judging by your responses and statements you dont have much experience in this area. Not trying to be debbie downer but thats just my 2 cents.

id agree with teejay, an aftermarket radio will give a little more power to your speakers, place a auxiliary connection on the front of the radio and will give lots of new features. with the wiring harness install is virtually plug and play.

Ok, I've decided on that jvc receiver and would like to know if someone could link me the pieces I'd need to order specific to my 2005 explorer. Not because I'm too lazy, I just want toget it right the first time and my dad, while handy, tends to know just enough to get stuck somewhere at the end. We will work on this together so I'd like to stack the deck in his favor and already have every piece to do the upgrade ourselves.

Again, appreciate the help in advance!

Buy a new one. Your time is worth something (money), and when you really add things together, it's worth a lot more than the cost of a reasonable aftermarket stereo. Why waste your money on a halfway fix when you can spend a bit more on a real solution?

Put another way, the percentage difference is cost is small when you put a dollar value on the time spent on either option.
