I have a '99 XLT 4x4 Explorer (SOHC).

I am receiving the P0401 check engine code error for "Insufficient EGR flow". Before we jump to conclusions and say that I need to replace my DPFE sensor, let me give a little background. I received this error code as soon as I got my explorer back from my mechanic, who replaced the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets and gave the explorer a tune up (including PCV valve replacement). I would find it too coincidental if it's a faulty EGR or DPFE sensor since all the work the explorer was undergoing. I imagine my mechanic forgot to hook a vacuum line up.

I'm including a picture of where I thought a vacuum line might be missing. This connection I'm referring to is in the center of the image. The silver thing at the bottom of the image is the IAC valve.

And here's another angle from the side where you can see the PCV valve. The connection is above the PCV valve and vacuum line.

It would be great if someone could verify whether or not this connection should be sitting there with no tube connected.

Why don't I just take it back to my mechanic? B/c he's in another state, I don't have time to drop it off, and I need to get this fixed to pass inspection. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Don't over think the problem by trying to link it to the other maintanence. Although it could have caused the problem (maybe a vacuum line got bumped). Start with the normal symptoms of the problem and go from there.

1) check and clean your EGR valve and tube to make sure there are no blockages
2) check all the vacuum lines that run to the dpfe
3) finally replae the dpfe

The simple fact is that this code only gets thrown by the computer when the DPFE sensor does not report correct measurements. And this is only caused when EGR flow is blocked or there is a problem with the dpfe sensor and vacuum lines.

Oh and the connection you show in your picture is not a connection, it is just something that was in the mold for the plastic intake, it leads to nothing

Well that's a relief. I'm glad all the hoses appear connected correctly. Would anyone happen to have the part number for the DPFE sensor? I've been looking on the net and can't seem to find it.

www.rockauto.com

it is listed as an egr pressure sensor--under the "emissions" category-
in case this turns out confusing--

AIRTEX Part # 5S2040 More Info
If new hoses are needed use 5S5860 for 4mm ID, or 5S5861 for 5.6mm ID. For pigtail use 1P1231.
