Newbie here: I have a 2001 xlt explorer with the 4.0 sohc engine. The engine has 62,000 miles and has started leaking coolant. I lose about 2-3 cups of coolant per 300 miles. The leak does not seem to occur all the time. It seems that some days it doesn't leak at all (from checking the fluid level in the over flow container) and then the next day it will lose a cup or so. Some times there is a little puddle (about the size of a golf ball) on the ground just to the inside and just behing the passenger side tire.

From reading other posts in here it seems as though this is the heater control valve (there is no coolant in the oil or the tail pipe). My problem is that I have crawled under the vehicle and cannot find anything that appears to be leaking towards th back of the passenger side engine compartment. Where is the heater control valve located on this particular explorer? Could it be something that I am not thinking of? Any help would be great. From looking at the puddle on the ground it appears to be leaking from some where around the big silver box in the back passenger side engine compartment (but could be leaking some where else and is running down to that location). Thanks in advance.

The heater control valve is located towards the rear of the passenger side engine compartment :D

That's probably what's wrong. I had the same problem. It costs about 60 bucks or so to replace.

It does sound like the Heater Control Valve, I had to replace mine also.

$60 for the valve Jason? Did you have the dealer install it or something? Mine was $17 from the Ford parts desk and installed in about 15 minutes.

Thanks for the replies......is the control valve located under the silverish box in the back of the engine? I'm having a hard time trying to find the valve.

It should be close to the silver thing. It's black in color and should have a vacuum line running into it along with heater hoses which run to it and then to the firewall.

My 2000 has a coolent leak also...
changed the heater control valve and thermostat.. still car heats up and idles 1000-2000 at stop (park or neutral)
just found out that the leak is internal.. leaking into 1,2, and mostly 3 cylinders..
it is in the shop now getting repaired.
