I have an intake kit on my Explorer, and have recently ordered the BBK throttle body to go with it. Today, I tried to install my new TB to no avail. I was able to get the TB positioning sensor out with out a problem. The same can be said about everything else EXCEPT the damn canister purge hose ( this is what the haynes manual calls it ). I have tried everything, including pliers, and WD 40 to get this metal elbow, which is inserted in to the bottom of the throttle body, out.

I have searched this forum, and couldn't find anything so if anyone has written anything thus far in regards to this part, I am sorry. Some members have written about the trouble that they have had with the TB sensor screw. For me, that was like a walk in the park. But I have no idea as to where I begin with this canister purge hose.

The Haynes manual doesn't give any info on how to remove this piece. It just tells the reader to remove it. The same goes for the instructions that came with the BBK piece. BBK refers to this piece which I am describing as the vacuum hose.

Can someone please help me out with this problem. I wanna do this myself, but fear that I will have to pay a mechanic to install this properly. I don't wanna miss out on how much more better this mod will make my ride aswell. Thanx.

I have an extra couple TBs in my garage. I just tried rocking it out with a pair of vise grips and broke the fitting off so be careful;). My suggestion would be to heat up the TB housing a bit and hope for the best. The best bet may be to wait until Monday and call BBK to see what they suggest. If you do end up busting it you could always tap the housing for a pipe thread and use some brass fittings to fix it up.

If you are trying to remove the plastic/rubber vacuum line feed for the canister purge have you thought about cutting it? Use a razor and slit the piece. You can replace it with new tube from the auto parts store.
You should not have to remove the brass press fit fitting from the throttle body, the new BBK unit should have this, does it not?

Good suggestions above. BBK TB's do indeed come with the vac port fitting. Some thoughts on this:

That vac line can be on there pretty tight. I have had success by wearing work gloves, and getting my fingers in behind it, then pushing down hard, wiggling a bit back and forth. Sometimes it takes patience and time.

If you smack your hand as the hose lets loose, it won't hurt as much since you're wearing the gloves.

You might also try putting some needle-nose pliers in there, with one side pushing off the TB, and the other side pushing off the vacuum fitting L-shaped endpiece. Then put one hand on each side of the pliers handles and try to pull apart the handles. Sometimes that will pop that vac line loose.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

Fortune, the BBK throttle body did not come with this brass fitting... which is what I am talking about. The kit did indeed come with a piece of black tubing.

This brass elbow is what I need to disconnect. How did you guys accomplish this? I wish that this kit did come with another replacement brass fitting. Does anyone have a part number for it? Any ideas?

It is a press fit, you can get it out. If you dont want to damage it you will need to buy an extractor kit.
It can be pulled without damaging, I have taken them out before, carefully.

Wow! My BBK TB did come with that fitting installed.
I wonder why yours didn't?

I just took another look at the throttle body and the parts that come with it. The piece of tube that came with it is a perfect fit to for the spout that the brass fitting is suppose to go. Do you think that I may have to slice the ruber hose before the brass fitting ( as Fortune has suggested ) and try using the piece of tube that came with this kit to some how fit it in and merge it in to the sliced off end of the rubber hose? I wonder if it will be a nice tight fit like on the throttle body end?

Fortune; I don't know whether or not this brass fiting is a press fitting. How would I be able to tell? I can tell you this... it's impossible to move, either back and forth, or by twisting it. It won't budge.

Rick has suggested heating it up which I haven't tried yet. As for the extractor kit, where can I get one from? Are there specific kits for specific sized brassed fittings? If so which one do I need? Is there a code to match the size? And how much do they cost? Where specifically can I get one from ( Ford dealership? ) I live in Canada, so I may not have access to the same shops as so of you that live in the states. Thoughts please!

Attemting to splice vac lines together doesn't work too well in my experience.

Are you still unable to remove the TB from the engine bay? If you can get it out of there, that will give you some room to tackle the problem of removing that fitting.

I still am surprised your BBK TB did not come with the fitting. Does it even have a hole in the bottom where the vac fitting would go??

Here's what I would do. First, I would remove the air intake tube. Then, I would detach the throttle linkage. Remove the TPS (throttle position sensor) on the side of the TB. Next, I'd undo the 4? bolts (13mm?) that hold the TB to the upper manifold.

Notice I have said *nothing* about removing the vac line yet. :)

Now I would have an unbolted TB sitting there, with the only thing holding it down is the vac line.

Since you can now pick up the entire throttle body in your hands, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to work loose that hose now.

Then you can worry about getting a vac fitting in there, with the TB sitting on your workbench rather than being still in the cramped engine bay.

10mm :)
New BBK ones are allen head.

The brass fitting the vacuum line attaches to is press fit into the aluminum throttle body housing.
If the new BBK unit does not have this fitting, first check to ensure the hole for it is there. If yes you will have to remove the fitting from your TB and press it into the new one. It will come out, it just takes some effort/tools ONCE the TB is out of the truck.

The BBK unit SHOULD have the fitting on it.

If you cut the vacuum line you need to plan to replace the entire length of line you just cut, this one the run should end at the canister purge valve

The later model trucks use a white plastic clip to retain the canister purge vacuum line to the throttle body. The earlier years (91-94) use a simple rubber hose pressed over the brass. If you have the later model style then you need to remove the white clip with a screwdriver, then the line should come off no problem.

funny thing about our trucks, a 8mm, 10mm, 12 and 13mm sockets will get you FAR into the engine bay...

Fortune;

This kit did not come with a replacement, and on the list of parts included, it's not listed.

Rhett;

I have tried what you are suggesting this past Sat, to no avail. I will try again this sat, although I am not very optamistic.

Thanks for everything, and I will keep you guys posted. If you have any other ideas, please fire em this way.
