Whats up,

My car is having a detonation (pinging) problem lately. I know this can be very bad for the car, or i have heard this at least. So im looking for some ways to stop the problem. I have a drilled air-box and k&n airfilter in a 98 V6 SOHC. ANYTHING that i can do please... thanx

If you aren't alredy, make sure to run premium fuel.

How long have you had the K&N? Have you serviced it? If the filter is new/clean you may consider replacing the spark plugs and as Dbrl said, run premium fuel.

Frshpwdr,

Does your Ex ping when you go over a hill, overpass, bridge, etc, on a warm day? If so then it is normal. I know it don't make sence. My Ex does this a lot. What octane are you running? If your running regular, then try premium, that should help a little. I also read that you are going to get a chip for your Ex. Make sure you fill it up with premium all the time. I was thinking about getting a chip for my Ex, but I heard that if you have pinging, then it will only make it worst...from what I've been told. Let me know how everything turns out.

My Pinging

Allright so today I went and bought a bottle of Engine Cleaner of whatever its called. THen i went to the gas station, filled up with a tank of Premium, (which is what i always use) and put it in. Soo far i havent had any pinging.... but i think I am gonna replace the spark plugs anyways with some nicer ones. Anyone know how hard it is to do this??

Okay you say that you run premium all the time. Dont.

In some cases running premium fuel in a vehicle designed for regular can cause pinging.

Try regular for a few tanks and see what that does.

Premium Fuel

Stephen,
Actually I made an error when i said that. What I shoulda said is that I always used 89 octane, but last week i decided to fill up with Premium.

You may also have some carbon build-up on the upper air intake side. Try a can of AMSOIL Power Foam to clean it up. The fuel system cleaner will not get those deposits.

Also, any kind of pinging is not normal. If the vehicle is working properly, there will be no pinging.

Okay guys, here is what's on my mind. Since am running premium fuel now with no mods expect for the KKM filter, I was thinking filling it up with regular next time and reset the computer. I bought this truck new and filled it up with regular before and no pinging. However some of my family members will drive my truck around and they told me they filled it up with premium when to replace whatever to make up what was in it. Here's what am thinking, if the truck has been using regular for quite a while, then all the sudden premium goes in place. Ever since this happen, I just fill it up with premium, since I heard it burns slower. The most common occurance(pinging) is in really hot weather going at highway speeds. Is this a computer thing to where it detect higher octane gas or something else? I tried fill it up with a mid-grade(89)and the pinging is worst.

For the premium to be used all the time, is when you have a chip in....most chip companies either reccomends it or requires it...mosty requires.
