Help! MOOG Lower Balljoint Greasing PoP!

Lowers
the grease will come out of the top of the boot on the lower moogs
In fact I do not believe the boots should be fitted over the bottom of the lower ball joint, they do not fit well and will cause this problem. The boots purpose is just to hold grease in place and keep water/debris out, they do not need to be sealed. If you have greaseable ball joints they should be serviced 3-4 times a year IMO at least
The lower Moogs I ordered from Rockauto came with the boot already attached. And from what I can see, it's a pretty tight seal.

No need to mess with the zerk fitting in the lower ball joints, just dont pump 10 pumps...2-3 pumps should have all the old grease coming out of the top of the boot.

Yea.. see, I'm not seeing this at all with the lowers... very odd.

Uppers
When you say the uppers will not hold grease, what do you mean? I do not have a zerk on my uppers nor have I ever seen greasavble uppers for a Gen II truck.
There the Moog uppers (came with the control arm). They have a grease fitting, but when I pump grease in... it just slids out the bottom of the boot. Now perhaps I'm just putting in a little to much grease, but even so, I would think eventually all the grease will seep out.

greasable ball joints are designed to have all the grease seep out, it is up to you to service them before they get dry

No way were the boots on my brand new moog lower ball joints going to fit over the lower metal portion of the ball joint! If you have an air tight seal then why would the ball joint be greaseable with no relief hole? It works 100% without the air tight seal AS LONG AS YOU SERVICE THEM WITH FRESH GREASE no need for the grease to be under pressure IMO, in fact I wouldnt want it to be!
Keep putting new grease in and forcing the old grease deeper into the joint? I would rather the old grease leak out easily......

Yea, exactly...that's what threw me.

I think I may contact Rockauto and ask them about the boot on the lowers then. Maybe they installed the boot themselves and did it wrong or something.

Why are you all putting so much grease in them? A single shot of grease every oil change is all they need. Anything more is a waste of grease. 10 pumps is WAY too much grease, especially for a joint that comes pre-filled with grease from the factory.

OF COURSE it has a relief valley for the grease to escape. How else would you expect to flush out contaminents such as road salt, sand, water... Make sure you mount that thing inboard, so as you are not greasing your pads and rotors.. lol.. that could lead to other "problems". I know for a fact that all MOOG ball joints have a relief hole like that specifically so you can flush the crap out

Then why don't my lowers release grease if they have a relief hole?..... Is it possible that whomever put the boot on on the joint (Moog or Rockauto) put it on wrong?

Why are you guys putting so much grease in them to start with? One shot at oil change or tire rotation time is way more than enough grease.

anything is possible.

Mine as installed without the boot being around the bottom of the joint, they just rest against it, this keeps the new grease in and allows the old grease to escape.

Boots just hold grease in place and keep dirt/water out...if the joint is greasable they do not need to be sealed....2 pumps is all it takes on my truck every 2 months

I got a reply back from Rockauto concerning the fact that with the way they installed the boot, there is no relief for the grease.

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your question. The boot installed is the correct one for the
joint. When greasing the ball joint, only enough grease to slightly swell the
boot should be added. The manufacturer has discontinued the "grease relief
hole" in an effort to discourage technicians from over greasing the part.

Thank you,

Karl
