I have no park at all and putting it in reverse only grinds. Wife thought it might be slipping a little in drive but not sure about that. Checking the fluid level shows a quart or more too much.

Please help

What do you mean "no park"? And when you say it grinds, be more specific please, exactly when does the noise start? What does it sound like? The more info the better!

ok sorry about that. when in park it will roll forward but not back. It is like it is in neutral when going forward. When I put it in reverse there is about a 1 to 2 second delay and then it starts grinding if I put it in park while it is grinding the noise gets louder. if I put it in neutral from reverse the grinding slows down to a stop. put it drive from reverse it clanks and the grinding stops and it goes in gear. When in drive as long as I am giving it some gas it works fine but if I let off the gas it starts grinding and there doesn't seem to be any breaking from the engine. then when I give it gas it makes a thump/clank and the grinding stops.

not sure how to describe what the grinding sounds like except it sounds metalic with kind of a buzzing.

let me know if you need more and I will attempt to describe it better

Thanks

No that helps. Others here are better trannie diagnosticians than I am. With that disclaimer out of the way... ANY metallic grinding noise from a trannie is BAD news. My opinion is that the only way you will know for sure is a teardown and rebuild. The park issue is wierd, ran into that recently on another one. That is all mechanical...When it doesn't work ya gotta wonder about linkage. The grinding sounds like a one way clutch to me.... but it COULD be a lot of things. Opera House is a good diagnostician... maybe he will have some ideas. The prognosis isn't good my friend.

Thanks I guess :( Still that thing with the park gives me some hope. I am going to take it to the shop in the morning and see what they say. I just bought it about 5 weeks ago it came with a 60 day 2000 mile 50/50 warranty. Just checked we are at about 2300 miles :banghead: go figure

Thanks Glacier991 That is very interesting. I know a little about the other systems in a car but have had no clue about the auto tranny.

As luck would have it I called the place where I bought the X today and they are going to honor the warranty even thought I am over on miles so I will only have to pay half of the bill. They don't do transmission work there so they are towing it to a good shop to have them do the work. Just a little worried tho...I called at 10:00 this morning and it is 5:10 PM now and the X is still sitting here. They said they would get before the day is out...When do you think the day goes out?

Oh well at least I was able to borrow a car untill it is fixed.

Still waiting to hear back from the transmission shop but I did get out of them that the transfer case is bad witch goes along with a couple of posts I have seen since this started.

Great news!!!! :) Just talked to the place I bought the X from. They had just settled a class action law suit and then went out of business but the dealership that owned them is still going strong so they are kissing alot of butt right now. They told me today that they are going to cover the full cost of replacing the transfer case and whatever other repairs are needed to make it right :) :). The transmission shop (that is the name of the place) told me that they had orderd the t/c should have it in yesterday and put it in today and if that solves all the problems I should have it back tomorrow. I can't wait I really miss it.

Got my explorer back yesterday  They replaced the transfercase. no more rolling in park, grinding and clanking in reverse. no more clankning on downshift. it even seems like it idles better but I am sure that is just me.... Just happy to have it back after 2 weeks.
