1999 Ford Explorer
Hi all from the UK

I bought a 1999 Ford Explorer (not that common in the UK) - and the most recent MOT states that front and rear subframes are corroded but not seriously weakened. When I took it down to my mechanic to look over (there were a few issues with the sale/car) he said that Explorers do not have subframes - I think he said after that they have (?Chevrolet) chassis. He had quite a good look under the car. Anyway, he is completely confident that they do not have subframes and this then means the MOT (legal safety test) could be 'dodgy'. Given some of the subject titles here. I am now not so convinced. So can someone tell me whether - on this age vehicle - they do or do not have subframes please. Thanks in advance.

The '99 Explorer is a body on full frame design. There are no subframe assemblies.

Thank you. Fab. Got even more worried seeing the post about the '96 Explorer and rusting subframes. So looks like the MOT test was 'rubbish' then! Thank you - as I'm challenging the dealer's 'sale' - on a few things - but the MOT is quite crucial for Trading Standards and reporting the MOT tester to DVSA.

Like Rick posted, that year has a frame under it like a truck, it's based off the Ford Ranger.

Welcome
