Help please. My engine is knocking.

Hello everyone...
Ok so i have a 02 explorer v6,its great,i love this truck.Anyway i drove it two days ago no problems,my wife drove it yesterday no problems/lights/anything even when starting up.This morning we try to start nothing,got 1/2 a crank but thats it,the truck has total power but will not start.So i call my father whos a grease monkey.Jumper cables ready to go we wait a few minutes,he got it to start problem is that once it started the motor now has a knock,not a tick but a knock.It has oil last tune up was in the spring.

did you happen to run it thru a puddle with all the rain we have been having? sorta sounds like it may have been hydro locked and when you hooked up both batterys and jumped it, it gave the starter enough grunt to spin the engine and bend some parts. just a thought for now til we get more info
 






Thanks for the help,on Sunday my father told me to passby his house so he can get a good look at it.well after lifting it and finding out we can't get to the flywheel do to it being sealed,he then told me I would have to take it to a shop...on the ride home I noticed the knock started going away,so by the time got home it was completely GONE?I also noticed it was low on oil.My wife drives it more than maybe it just needed some oil,I've been driving it since Monday it seems back to normal I'll keep u guys posted.thanks again.

thats great news!! if you ever have to get to the flywheel in the future, you just have to pull the starter out. then you can rotate the flywheel if needed, and take the torque converter bolts out if you were pulling the trans for any reason

keep an eye on that oil... my 4.6 with 120k goes through a little over a quart between oil changes.

if you've started that kind of wear from oil starvation, it's downhill from there.
 






Ok so the taping is back,now the engine shakes at idle.it turned off at a couple red lights,engine light is now on also,can anyone explain to me how can I fix this. Problem please?

did you check the codes from the engine light? maybe its pinging from running lean? or maybe its the timing chain
 






No but I will as soon as I get out of work,in a nut shell 3weeks ago my wife goes to start it no start...I get home & try to jump it,it starts but its tapping & shaking.that Sunday I take it to my father who's a career mechanic,he's confused & tells me to take it to ford($$$).on the way home the shaking & tapping stops(???),fast forward today while driving it starts shaking & tapping...also when we stoped at a red light it turned off a few times,oil pressure seems fine.
 






Crank pulley any good? Not sure what years have issues but I heard about crank pulley's coming apart.

Don't know?I just went autozone for the computer test but it said linkerror,for some reason there thing couldn't read good/bad codes from my 02 explorer...I really don't know where to start,fluids are all ok,by far I'm no mechanic but I did 8yrs working as a counter man for a autoparts co.but WOW I'm lost on this one.
 






the reason their scanner didnt work is your computer is the obd2 C.A.N.. They probably used the ACTRON scanner (orange). I had the same thing happen with my old actron scanner. Weird thing is it worked on a 2005 chevy truck , but not a 05 cobalt. Didnt work on my explorer so I got a craftsman obd2/can scanner .
 






ok well my father got his hands on a snapon scanner mtg????.it came up in this order p0171 leanbank1(pcv valve),p0505 so we put in the (IAC),no airleaks but the engine still bucks and backfires a little...in the morning we replaced the pcv valve,IAC motor,cleared codes,got the p1000,by the end of the day the scanner said incomplete,then iac incomplete after we replaced the iac?
 






So I gave up and took the explorer to FORD,hopfully they can find and fix the problem.in my last post the last thing I changed was the (IAC)valve/motor,along with the pcv valve...I read that there could be a handfull of things that will cause the powerloss/stalling/rough idle,but since I'm not much of a mechanic and this seems more like a ford goof or problem they know about I much rather leave it in there hands...
 






Ok so I got the dreaded phone call from ford and the 3rd cylinder isn't putting out the psi its suppose 2,the then starts to try and sell me a motor...sez that if were gonna take it apart then u might as well by a motor from ford 5k!!!I never thought id say it but ford managed to make a pile of **** look like the monalisa...thnx ford I just love dumping thousands of dollars into a svu wihile I'm paying for it...
 






Ok so the ***** rep at FORD tried to sell me an engine for 5k,he said"your better off"(yea I know),well turns out that the suv has codes,p0303(misfire C-3),p0306(misfire C-6),p0316(misfire 1st 1k revs)...
I did read that FORD knows about it and designed a new cylinder head(if anyone knows where I can buy please post)...On Saturday we will start to break down the engine,are there any other ignition-coils other than the brick sitting ontop of the engine?BTW its a 02 explrer xlt 4.0,once again thnx to everyone helping out.
 






Hello,so the engine is almost out all we have left is exaust and trans.we did notice the 6cylinder spark plug was smashed & 0 compression coming from cyl 6(albeit the tapping noise),since we are gonna rebuild the motor I was wondering if any of u know about a new design of the timing kit and where I can buy,the timing tools needed.Again I have a 02 explorer 4.0 xlt,thnx in advance.
 






Ok I do need some help,I need the timing set for the 4.0 engine but I don't want to get the same timing set that caused the engine to fail to begin with.like I asked before,is there a new design to the plastic timing chain guide if so part#,pics,web site where I can buy it?thnx.
