i have a 5 spd manual tranny in my truck. and the problems i'm having with it don't sound like transmission problems to me but thats what i'm being told is likely the problem. and considering i don't know much about this stuff i can't say. when in gear and coasting, giving it no gas it feels just like i'm hitting the brake and releasing... hitting the brake and releasing... something is catching and releasing, it will do this untill my vehicle stops completely. it does not do this while i'm on the gas... or atleast i don't notice it. it does not do this if i throw it in neutral. and it doesn't really do it untill i'm at lower speeds... 30-40mph does that sound like a possible transmission problem? its not my brakes. they are new and have been checked. i suspected my rearend possibly but everyone says no to that. it only does this in gear not in neutral. any ideas? if u need more info let me know and i'll try to clarify it better if i can. thanks

It might be a clutch problem. Have you checked your rear parking brake?

just double checked the rear parking brake no problems there. we jacked up the rear and put in 1,2,3 gear and let off the gas but it won't do it like when its under a load. we killed the engine and put it in gear... then moved the tire back and forth quickly. lots of noise coming from the transmission. which could mean a clutch problem but it almost sounds like it further back than the clutch area. regardless there is a lot of clanking in the transmission area. i assume thats not normal but i really don't know. it seems to confirm that it could be the tranny or clutch.

feels and sounds the same in 2hi, 4hi and 4low...

just bumping... i bought a new clutch just b/c, which will be put in one of these days. but i'm wondering if this sounds like a clutch problem or a tranny problem. it has to be one of the two (i assume) as it only does it in gear. no problems coasting in neutral or with the clutch engaged. anyone know?

Simple way to check it. Jack the front end up, start the engine, and switch to 4high. Then, crawl underneath the truck, and put a big honkin' pair of channel locks on the front driveshaft and try to turn it. If you cannot turn it, there's a pretty good chance that the transfer case isn't the problem.

Assuming it won't turn, wedge a brick or rock underneath one of the tires and try to manually turn the other wheel. If you can hold one stationary while the other one spins, there's an axle problem.... halfshaft, axle shaft, or diff spider gear issues come to mind.

Now, if the front driveshaft turns when you wrench on it, you have a transfer case issue. Check for power at the brown wire with a 12V test light or DMM. If you've got power at the brown wire, but no lock-up, disconnect the transfer case wiring at the connector, and check for continuity to ground through the transfer case clutch coil. If you've got a ground, the clutch isn't failing electrically, it's a mechanical issue.

i swapped in a manual transfercase. the auto 4wd is long gone. and its a new rebuild. it works as its supposed to. i've already checked to make sure its working correctly. no problems with it. thats y i'm assuming its clutch or tranny. i've had this problem for awhile now and actually replaced the transfercase thinking it was the problem but it made no difference. it helped with some funny noises but didn't help this particular problem. so its not a big deal since my old transfer case was a bit worn out. but it made no difference as far as these problems go.
