Help Please... Temp Gauge is Stuck

I was wondering if anyone can help. I have a '98 Explorer XLT 5.0L. The temp gauge is stuck in the middle. I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and the gauge dropped. When i put the battery terminal back on and started the engine it shot right back up to the middle spot and stays there, no matter if the truck is running or not. Got down to 35 degrees last night and when i checked it in the morning it still is in the middle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Josh

Might be a bad temperature sender? Or maybe try taking the sender off and cleaning it really good, could possibly be a short somewhere also...
