02 Explorer xls 4.0 4x4
Alright well my name is cody. I am currently on my second year at Ferris state for automotive engineering. Up until last winter i LOVED my 02 explorer. Great on gas, lots of room, four wheel drive ect. last December i made a bad decision and deiced to go to a buddies house...in-30 temperatures without giving my truck a good warm up. I made it there no problem. (only a mile away) but once i tried to start it a couple hours later it was a slow start..a good sign that my timing was about to go bad. I had just made it into my drive way when the car shut off. I knew what had happened. (Btw i replaced alll intake valves) So long story short i let it sit until i returned from school in may. After spending all summer and new bearings top and bottom, piston rings, timing chain kit, gaskets, plugs just about everything i could put into the motor new and top of the line i did. I even had the crank resurfaced as well as the balance shaft. After reinstalling the motor and hearing the motor warm up and btw it sounded absolutely amazing, after it was all good to go i put it into reverse....nothing. no sounds no vibration just nothing. I went all over the motor and tried to figure out what went wrong. I thought about the torque converter and thought i probably rushed it and didnt get it in all the way...so after more heart ache and struggle i removed the trans and sure enough the torque converter wasnt in all the way. After really cleaning it up and even adding some trans fluid i reinstalled it into the trans. It went in all the way and i couldnt spin it. She was solid. So then i put it back in, it goes really well and smooth. I bolted all tranny bolts and connected everything. i decided to jack the trans up enough for a test run. I also jacked up the gas tank (which needed to be removed to get a transmission brace bolt out) and connected everything there. My battery was week from the sit earlier so i had to jump it but she started once again and runs smooth. But i still have the same problem. The output shaft doesnt move...i can spin it by hand and it slows the motor down and sounds like its engaging but doesnt. I adjusted the shift cable so i know thats all good. It just doesnt make sense whats going on.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, i really want this truck back for the winter

You're probably in for a trans rebuild. Not what you want to hear, but you probably toasted the pump without the torque converter all the way in. Somebody else may know more than me, but I think you'll need to rebuild it now.

That's a possibility it makes sense. All spleenes were good but I don't know the specifics on how the pump works
