Help!! Sludge......

When you don't know the maintenance history of the truck slude can build up massively...I bought a 99 Sport with 151k on the clock and the no oil pressure situation was there as well...

I dropped the pan and this was what I found...I cleaned the windage tray, the oil pan, and replaced the pump and pickup...Ran the truck for 20k with excellent oil pressure and still had lots of sludge in the top end even after running synthetic oil for the entire time...Finally replaced the long block and now the engine is sludge free and going to stay that way..

That is exactly how mine looked except I had much more sludge.... it was terrible.

I appreciate the info.... I'm rebuilding mine now and giving it to my 16yo daughter.

I maintain 5K oil change intervals using Amsoil oil so it should be fine from here on out. Amsoil doesn't sludge and can be run up to 12,000 miles... it's 100% synthetic base stock without all the impurities as regular conventional or synthetic.

I'm hoping it'll turn out to be a pretty good SUV for her.... My wife's Expedition has been a very dependable vehicle... It currently has 225,000 miles on it and runs great.
