help.. squeek on startup .. not pully related

Alrighty I have my truck back :bounce: :bounce:

They replaced both the drive unit and the position sensor which sits on top.
So far no noise, but the morning startup will tell the tale. Surprisingly it corrected my slightly irregular idle as well.

Easy Care really screwed the dealership over on the repair reimbursement though. They only agreed to pay for parts, 1 hour of labor (took em 4.5), and they refused to pay diagnostic cost or taxes.

The dealer had to charge me for diagnostic even though they said it would be covered :( putting my total close to 300 out the door. However he told me to look in the back next to my toolbox when I got home and smiled. What he or the tech had done and not charged me for was tossed a new TRE (warranty refused) and a ford racing hat back there.

Nice guy...........though it wouldn't surprise me if the warranty gets billed for that TRE replacement in a round about way on another rig......

Nice to hear it went well...

Today is all about Tierod replacement and a front brake job though, so we're not quite happy yet. But getting there. The front pads are just getting replaced with cheapies. The rear will be upgraded in a few weeks or so to powerslot rotors with good pads as will the D30 hanging in the top of the garage.

Glad to hear its fixed (hopefully), post after a cold start or two, I'm curious if its gone. My idle, now that you mention it, is a little off, not bad but it wasn't perfect so maybe that will fix it too.

My truck is at the dealer now. I dropped it off last night so they could start it cold and I left a letter explaining the problem, a printout of this thread with the important stuff highlighted, and a note to have a tech read the letter before HE started the vehicle, not some peon parts runner. We'll see...

She fired up withut a squeek this morning at 8 a.m.
Spinning the old part by hand I can deffinately tell that the bearings were shot!!

Here is a picture of our offending part. It is a bit wierd as I had to digitally brighten the picture up. Thje long piece is the drive body. The cap is the Hall effect sensor (cam position sensor) and of course the thing in the middle is a 19mm socket for scale.

what a good guess I had Finally.lol...

Glad it all worked out for you.

The dealer called me and told me it was probably the cam position cellunoid. ?? Hadn't heard that one before, but I think I should tell them to replace the whole unit while they're in there. The service advisor said it was a 5 hour job.

5 Hour job??? ouch, I wouldn't rate replacing the drive unit and sensor any more than a 2 1/2 to 3 hour job at the most, and that's speaking from experience.

this is for a 2002 but should be similar adn right out of alldata.com...

I had one replaced at my brother in laws school and he said it was fairly simple... not close to 5 hours.. even for students..

Hmmm...I'd like to see that info for mine. From what I remember, the part is much easier to replace on the SOHC than the OHV. Doesn't matter to me that much though, as long as it gets done, the warranty company pays everything above my $100 deductible.

a seasoned mechanic would have the upper intake off in less than 20 mins.
The drive unit would add an aditional 10 mins at the most to remove seeing it is held in by one bolt and a plug on the sensor.

Putting it back together is another story, again, a seasoned mechanic would have set the motor to top dead center and adjusted the 26 degrees on the crank to make sure all that was needed was to pull the old unit, and drop in the new, with minor adjustments needed, of course. all of which would be an additional hour.
Add in the prep work and setup of the upper intake and gaskets, and the reinstall of said part and additional plugs and connections, another 45 mins AT MOST. total time of 2 hours..2 1/2 at most for any seasoned tech.

How do I know? I've done it before... :D

This, of course doesn't factor in the "coffee breaks" and the other distractions a less seasoned tech tends to allow to interfere with their work...heh heh.

most shops bill by the hour for labor, and find ways to milk every penny they can.

If I had a shop time estimate manual thing, I'd check it out and see, but I'm really not too concerned about it since the warranty company will pay it anyway. If they weren't, I'd be a lot more worried about it.

Easy Care told the service writer that they would only pay .9 hours for the job, and that 4.5 was too far fetched to believe. :D i didn't pay the extra time either :p

I did watch a good part of the repair though , and he worked almighty slow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is because that is what it calls for..

The tech had to pull the whole upper intake phlenum to get to the drive body. So he said. Labor was at 4.5 hours.

I want to clarify something: Did your truck do the bird chirp when it was idling?

Hmm well, my truck never does it while idling. It only bird chirps on acceleration, when the truck is cold...

Makes me think IAC perhaps???

I don't know about that. My IAC was bad and made the "Ford mating call" but I've never heard of it doing the high pitched, bird chirping noise that the problem Dreamr and I had does.
