I'm wanting to swap out my 4.0 for a 5.0 and was wondering if any of you have done this swap and what's involved (electrical, mounts, brackets, etc)and how tough: it is to do:exp:

02+ didn't have a 5.0, they came with the 4.6 2V. What are you looking to do with your explorer? Like what are the goals because there are plenty of parts out there to make the 4.0 do some damage;)

A 5.0 isn't worth the swap to me because of the lack of compatibility. You will a need new trans(unless there's a bellhousing adapter), transfercase if you are 4x4 and driveshafts made to hook it all up. Figure out how to get the gauges to work properly, etc. If this was a 2wd drag terror, then the swap would be easy.

sleeper

it is a 2wd and going to be a street terror:exp:

Well then forget about a 5.0 and let's get serious, stroked 5.8 with a wild H/C/I and exhaust, make a nice 450-500 at the wheels. Hook it up to a built c4 with a 4000 stall and 4.56 gears/locker in the back. Flowmaster 70's to keep the tone down and a 150 shot of giggle gas?

HMMMM Has possibilities:exp:

options

This is an interesting option what kind of horsepower will the 4.0 handle?:exp:

Jakee, Jah81592(James Henson-Vendor that sells the SCT3's), 18psiExplorer are among the few that have turbo'd their 4.0's. They have explorer sports, but the idea is still the same. Here is the forum that may have the answers you are looking for.

You can find it by going to the Sportrucks link on the top left part of the page and then click on Need For Speed.

potential

Thanks for the info man I never even considered building the 4.0 but it looks like there is a lot of potential there also. Looks like if done right you can gain alot of horsepower and still get decent mileage under normal driving conditions:exp:

In your opinion what do you think will give the best power gains turbo or supercharging ?:exp:

P.s.

I'm leaning more toward supercharging:exp:

Without question a turbo will provide more power boost for boost, but a supercharger will give you that "instant" lowend kick. Turbo's are more mid-high pull when superchargers are more low-mid pull.

Supercharger would be an easier route to go because there is a full kit that's available unlike a turbo. There are no turbo kits and if you don't have the knowledge of doing one, it will be a learning experience;)

If you are not really into fab work and cutting things up, I'd go supercharger. That M62 supercharger should be able to put enough boost out to make you happy and you could have the case ported or upgrade to an M90. If you want to save some money and try some of the basic mods first, I would do a CAI, exhaust, efan, UDP's and a tune.

Question, how much do you owe on your explorer?

$$$

I own it free and clear that's why I want to start playing with it I've gotten very attached to it plus it still looks brand new inside and out miles aren't bad on it and no paint or body work needed other than mods I want to do. I do plan on building another motor so I can continue to drive it while working on the new motor.:exp:

amount owed

Hey Limited why were you asking about amount owed on my x?:exp:

That a myth actually, a properly sized turbo will make just as much power
down low, it will also keep pulling up top making it feel more linear,
the eaton supercharger falls off on top making it "feel" like its stronger on the bottom.

Another thing is most aftermarket kits and people use large turbos for max power and those will have some lag. Using a smaller turbo will make it respond almost instantly and still make all the power a 4.0 can handle.

IMHO the EE kit which costs $4500 for a measly 70 or so hp is really not worth it
considering thats more than a lot of us paid for the entire vehicle.

Not saying it would not be more fun to drive than stock , at least until
you remember the $4500 :)

Turbo vs. Supercharger

Well I must admit I have limited knowledge about turbo . I.m not even sure of the right way to set up the new motor (headwork, cam. bottom end, computer, etc) I've read a few threads on here trying to study a little but it's difficult to figure out fact from fiction. It also appears I'll have as much cash tied up either way if I bolt either set up to a stock set up I'll get limited results so I have to build up the engine either way and I'm told I can acheive better results with alot less tuning if I build the motor right with a supercharger and maintain better driveability and higher milage than turbo?????????:exp:

The M62 blower used on the ee kit will limit you to about 80hp over stock before it heats air too much.Kind of defeats the purpose of having a built motor .
A properly sized turbo to give same low end will give you about twice that much.
For a simple 60-70hp upgrade the EE kit will be easier but any more than that especially if your gonna build the motor will either require a custom kit with a bigger blower or a turbo.
If you have limited knowledge on kits the web is good place to start your research,
since the engines are the same checking out the big Mustang sites is a great research tool as is the turbo and supercharger boards.
one decent one is
