HELP!!! whats wrong with my stock DECK?

I have a 98 explorer eddie Bauer with the premium sound option. I am planning on getting a new system because this one is by no means "premium." Anyways, a couple weeks ago my deck started fading in and out. The green letters where the time and track number etc. sit, would suddenly dissapear. Then a few minutes later they would fade back on. Now it is happening more frequently. Can someone help me out and tell me whats happening here? Is it time to get a new deck now?

I don't know if this helps but I have a 'EB with the so called premium system in it. At the first sign of any strange behavior I disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes. Happens about 2-3 times a year. Symptoms include three dashes at startup, dim clock with no switch response and various other oddities..
