2000 Ranger Trailhead 3.0
HI, my son has a 2000 Ranger Trailhead 3.0 We'd like to replace the clutch but can't get the shifter off of the transmission. There is a threaded stud that we removed the nut off of but the shifter won't budge. Used wd40 without any luck. Tapped with a hammer. Can't really use heat because of the rubber all around. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I guess I don't understand how it is held on and the Chilton's manual doesn't say. It just says to remove the nut and pull straight up. Thanks in advance.

If it's anything like the shifter in my Mach 1, it takes quite a bit of force to pop it off the tranny. Ford used rtv to hole it on, and I had to re-install the shifter lever and use it as a fulcrum to pop the adhesive that was holding the shifter base to the tranny.

that nut you took off, rethread it on the opposite side that it came from, run it down tight against the shifter, as you tighten against the shifter it will pull the stud through the hole, once the threaded stud is out the shifter will just slide upward with ease, the stud needs to be removed before the shifter handle can come off

CheapThrillEX is right. If the stud does not have a thread on the other side you can tap the stud to remove it. It is a good idea to put the nut back on the first few threads to protect the thread form being damaged. The stud has a taper to it and locks itself in place. It must be removed to take the shift lever off.
