Last week I changed my battery on my 1996 six cylinder explorer. Today I went to get it smoged and the test failed:

Code:
[U]Results[/U] [U]ECS[/U]
 [B]FAIL[/B] MIL/Check Engine Light Carb./Fuel Injection

This vehicle failed the MIL/Check engine Light Test due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self tests

My check engine light is not on so I took it in to a mechanic and I told him the situation he said to drive it for a few more miles at a steady speed to reset the computer and to come back so he can hook up a diagnostics tool to see if the computer has reset yet.

Not messing around I went out and drove 50 miles and brought it back in he ran the tests and the computer has not yet reset, he also said that there were no error codes and to keep driving it.

I need to get my explorer registered on the 8th I don't have time to drive it around and hope it's going to work.

Does anyone have any suggestion? Would it help if I disconnected the battery again and try to start all over?

Thanks in advance.

Do NOT disconnect the battery again! That's what gave you the P1000 code to start with. These drive cycles can take a few hours, or they can take weeks. You can try this and see if you can force a drive cycle. This doesn't always work however.

By the way, most governing authorities will give you a gratis period to clear a code like this. And forcing a drive cycle, or driving the vehicle is the only way to clear that code.

Hey thanks a lot! Yesterday I took the explorer down to Monterey (Cannery Row) for the day, hopping over the Santa Cruz Mountains first so I could get to Hwy 1 which I thought would be perfect because of it being about 200 miles round trip of fairly strait road cruising in sections from 40mph, 55mph to 65mph (65mph most of the time).

I'm thinking this did the trick... what do you think? I'll take it back into chevron and see if it worked before heading back to the smog place. If not I guess I'll have a long day with that Driving Cycle work sheet you gave me.

Thank's again
