Help!!!

Ok, I have a 96 XLT 4x4 with 193K. I just had the tranny rebuilt about 4 months ago. When I take it out of park and into reverse the idle drops from about 1000rpm to about 6 or 700rpm and the engine starts shaking pretty bad. Sometimes when im driving with constant pressure on the gas it revs up to over 5500rpm and as high as 6000rpm then just drops back to normal. It's got no passing power and its sluggish off the line. Yesterday i noticed a smell coming from somewhere under the hood, I couldn't place it. And today when I take it from reverse into drive or park into drive there is a knocking sound.

I dont know if all these probs are linked or what but I really need your help.

Just because it was rebuilt does not mean it eliminates it as the problem, in FACT most problems with the auto's in our Explorer's being at the rebuild......

Does the check engine light come on?

this could be a u-joint, who did your tranny and are they certified. Also If it has been only 4 months I would take the damn thing back and give them a peice of my mind!

I had the tranny rebuilt at Cottman Transmission. I took it back to them about 2 weeks after they rebuild the damn thing and put in a new converter, because it was leaking some fluid and surging off the line. They said theres nothing wrong with the tranny but they could replace the speed sensor for 200 bucks. I basically told them to blank themselves.

Im supposed to have a 12/12,000 warranty but as I said they don't want to do free work.

My CEL stays on due to a bad CAT, but sometimes it starts blinking at 1 sec intervals, usually when its jumping to 6000rpm...

$200 for a speed sensor change?????? Thats frickin crazy. Its like a $15 dollar part that takes 5 mins to change.

I could careless if they dont want to do work on it. Its under warranty. If they dont them tell them your going to a small claims court and calling the BBB.

The CEL may be on due to a bad cat but it could also be other problems. Go have your codes scanned and why dont you fix the CAT???

I don't have the cash to get the CAT fixed. Everyone says its 700 for the part and about 2-400 to install...cant afford it...

I also can't be without my x for any period of time as its my only way to work and i cant afford a rental. Also im not even sure if the prob stems from the "work" they did you know... and they take forever to work on it.

Where can i go to get the codes scanned for free?

Autozone has a free CEL scan...have them scan it and then post back here...we'll tell you what really could be wrong...don't listen to what they tell you there. 9 of 10 guys there have no idea what they're talking about.
