my 05 4.0 2wd xlt hesitates when the accelerator is first pressed and when a forced downshift is innitiated.

it's like you can count one thousand one between mashing the gas and the downshift / acceleration occuring.

i get the same hesitation when i mash the gas from a standing start.

not sure if it's related but i hear a clunk from the tranny when i am coasting/slowing down and the tranny downshifts to slow the truck.

HELP......

If I remember correctly they had just started using Throttle by Wire with that year (can't remember for sure, try searching for TBW delay or something) and they programmed it to hesitate a little for longevity issues or something like that. You can have the computer reflashed at the dealer to get rid of the delay. The clunk from the tranny is another separate and common issue.

My 04 xlt 2wd 4.6L does the same thing. It isn't that bad from a dead stop (hardly any delay at all), but one time I started to pull out across 4 lanes of traffic, I got off the gas because I hesitated and thought about not going for it, then I decided I was committed so I got back into the throttle hard again and it was about a 1-2 second delay... it really put me in an unsafe situation. I took it to the stealership and explained the scenario and they wanted like $120 to flash the computer and they told me it wasn't a for sure fix. I told them they should be embarrased that there truck/product works like that and that they should give me a complementary flash. No luck, thanks ford, so I said the hell with them, at least I'm aware of it right? then I went and bought myself a case of beer with the money I saved/didn't waste. I probably should have put that money in my "replacement" transmission fund jar. Don't get me wrong though, I still love the vehicle!

That's ridiculous I swear I heard of other members on the board having no problem getting the hesitation you talked about fixed for the exact reason you mentioned.

there is a TSB out for this fix, which means they have to fix it for you, and not for $120!

When mashing on the gas there maybe a lag. Mine doesn't do it on normal acceleration but does it a bit when I mash it. A buddy has a TBW Silverado that does it too. Even with a throttle cable lots of vehicles don't like to have the gas mashed. If it's something that happens under normal and reasonable driving then yes it's a problem. Off to look up that TSB...

TSB does NOT mean they have to fix it, a TSB is primarily a tool to aid Ford techs in diagnosing and repairing certain issues. You may be thinking of a campaign or recall, which Ford issues as a factory paid repair if needed. If the vehicle is under warranty, the TSB will be done if it applies at Fords expense.

Yeah I guess that's what I meant, sorry for the confusion
