Hey Im a newbe and wanted to say hello. I have a 98 sport, I got from a friend for $400. He likes Explorers so much he got a newer one. Same color and everything. My 98 has problems. If anyone can help I would be greatful. It has a rattle coming from the valve cover on the passenger side. Any info would help b4 I spend alot of $$$ hunting down this problem. Plans are to put a 5.0, maybe supercharged, lift kit, mudders,etc....Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! Does it rattle at a certain RPM or speed or is it all of the time?

Really I cant pinpoint where its coming from. It sounds like its coming from the front of the engine, then sometimes it sounds like its from the valve covers. I know that sounds wierd but I just cant pinpoint it. And it seems to quite down after 2500 rpms, give or take a few. Sorry about being vaige.

It sounds like it could be the timing chain.

How do I tell if its the SOHC or OHV? Its the 4.0.

That info was useful but it didnt tell me if its an OHV or SOHC. It looks to be an OHV.Thanks to all who welcomed me. And hope I could be of use sometime.
