depends on what year of explorer...i have a first gen and love it!
also depends on what type of driving you do.

Hello and welcome mate- I hope you get a good un, look out for balljoint wear, not often picked up on MOT- but shows in the end as inner wear on the tires, before you feel the play. Also be sure the timing chains are good- at least find out if the tensioners have been changed, both front and rear along with the in let manifold seals (comes in a kit with the front tensioner and an oil restrictor-00m12).
The timing chain on many of the mark 2s are very suspect by now and rattle in the rev range 2000-2500- this indicates, guide wear/breakdown and if you can find an Ex with this job already done all the better- contact Duncan or Justin, both on this forum as they both fix and sell Exs mate. Least you will have a decent example to start with no known issues!
Good luck!!!!

hello, there seems to be a lot of bad ones about at the moment judging by some of the posts on here latley.i paid £2000 over a year ago and it had 69000miles and full service history i test drove it by myself the owner was a used car salesman rather than private and it dosent have lpg which are prone to burn valves so im told by 2 owners ive met locally,so the saving on fuel theyve saved can be used to go towards having the worn parts replaced it seems.i for a change have been lucky with fords i had a st24 estate for almost 2 years without changing anything and the present explorer which i take offroading and also use as a daily drive ,you can find good ones just dont expect to get one on ebay for nothing as theres probably a reason (usually)they start at 99p!.be prepared to spend £1500 at least for a good one but must go and test it for while as its still no guarantee its good or just buy a cheap one which you could be lucky with or spend half its ownership up on jacks whilst replacing all the worn out parts its up to you, just dont expect to pay nothing for one and have nothing wrong with it as with everything or everycar you get what you pay for !good luck in searching but you wont find a better 4x4 than this for the money

thanks everyone i was going to spend as much as i could id really like anorth face one but unlikily ill have that sort money to spend £2000 tops probally

theres a p reg 1 on ebay buy it now £1000 with cam chains done 7,000 ago but i wont get my money though for a fews yet

im selling a my cadillac deville to buy one lol

Defo get one! I just got mine for £1200 it's a w-reg with a full mot and a bit of tax. How many rangeys could you get in that price range? Prob one that's spares/repairs!

As for reliability, mines got a few probs but that's the gamble with any second hand vehicle. Would say that they are much more reliable than a P38 Rover that's gunna cost loads more to begin with. Also if it rains I'm safe in the knowledge my bootfloor won't rot through in a few weeks like a disco!

yeah i had a 3.9 classic alot more reliable but still not very head gaskets steering boxes rust cheap wiring etc etc lol tbh i think land rovers all together are pretty rubbish im ford man having got capri's mk2 escorts etc and had loads of other fords

are the 1st gen ex alot better then ? id happyly have a 1 st gen import one

Hi and welcome, wrong question to ask on here we are all EX mad of course you should buy one. Nothing else on the road gives as much pleasure to drive. I have always a grin on my face:D while driving mine.
