Cats

Make sure before you go and buy them, check on your stock MAF if you have the initials CA anywhere on it. If you do, then that means you have the pain in the A$$ California emissions. I have it on mine and I found out that if I put on high flow cats that aren't compatible, it could possibly cause my truck to not pass emissions testing when getting it inspected. There is a company that makes them, I just can't remember the name off hand.

random technologies...the best there is, period...

cats

Thats the name. I couldn't think of it. Thanks. Now hopefully I can remember, because I am going to need to be getting one myself soon. The dreaded CEL just came on this morning to let me know. Figures.

you should pull the code first, could be something else...autozone will do it for free

random technologies

went to the website for random technologies and I saw they had cats for sport tracs, any for 96 ex's? If so where can I find them.

i used a 3" metal matrix race series, it is a universal cat and flows better than anything else on the market...make sure you get what will work for you though, i am supercharged and fully tuned, so i needed something that flowed really well...you probably don't need that much...

Some people on the forum have said that for our type of vehicles, the high flow cats are pretty much useless. No real gain. Do a search on the board and see what others have said.

For the V6's an improvement is less likely. The V8's still have four, so removing one and using a better version for the other will help.

FYI, if you can, get a look at the outlet side of a cat housing, inside. The brick inside creates a very large slow moving exhaust flow. That exhaust is then forced to hit a blockage(outer shell of cat), and collide into a small round opening. Notice that I did not use the term "funnel" to describe that transition.

The transition on the outlet side of all catalytic converters is awful. Note that I include all high flow cats in that statement. The outlet of a cat should be shaped like the outlet of a header collector. The large size(area) of the brick should be transitioned smoothly down to the appropriate sized pipe, with no protrusions, weld slag, etc.

If you want an improvement, have the outlet side of the cats cut off, and replace them with a collector adapter, Buy the adapters that transition 3.5" collectors down to 2.5" pipe, etc. Trim them to fit, whatever it takes, and you will gain free horsepower. Regards,

pipe sizing

I called for a cat and I didnt know the diameter.. can you guys help me out. I've got an 96 with a 4.0

borla and dynomax both have high flow cats

its an alternative way to opening up the exhaust with out loosing too much backpressure. Some say the gains are somewhat noticable, sound is the biggest difference

if you got a nice set of headers on there, a high-flow cat would be good.

if your truck is stock, just put an OEM cat on there.

A universal cat can be had for as little as $50, even from J>C> Whitney. They are as good as OEM replacements, but just not emmisions approved in most states. Good luck,

cats

96Saleen, I did pull the code with my code reader, and unfortunate for me it was the bank 1 problem. So yes I know for a fact that it is my convertor(s). I got tired of driving to Auto Zone to get a test done, so I bought a reader for myself to save me the miles. :D I've been looking for a reason to change the cats anyway. Now the wife has no reason to say no

How many miles on the engine? The O2 sensors should be replaced if codes are referring to them or cats. Good luck,

o2 sensors

The O2 sensors are about a year old, so I don't think it's them. Besides, I have had the code for the O2 sensors come up before (one of my trips to Auto Zone) and this wasn't it. I did make sure all of the connectors were clean so like I said, i don't think thats the problem. But thanks.

If you change cats, you can save money if you have a shop that will weld universal cats in. The cost of a universal cat might be $50, and the OEM replacement more like $100-$150 each. Good luck,
