My stock 97 explorer has been acting up these days and I don't know what to do. Today, I turned on the car and off a lot today and whenever I turn the car on it jumps the RPM meter up to 2500RPM, this never used to happen, the engine is more louder than it was... whats happening?

Not positive but about 50% of the time when I start mine up the same thing happens. I've got a 99 XLT, and I've heard it could be a dirty fuel filter? I just havn't had the time to look into it. If you happen to figure out the problem please post it up here!

My 99 always starts in high RPM, and I have all the maintenance done (and everything is recent). Right after a cold start, the RPMs shoot up to about 2000 and stay there for a certain period of time until they settle at below 1000 as the truck is idling in Park (drops down to below 1000 right away if I put it into any gear).

I always thought this was normal, and attributed to some sort of a self-test and warm-up procedure. It takes up to a few minutes for the RPMs to settle down when it's very cold up here (winter time).

mine does this occasionally, spikes high RPMs for like a second then drops around 750-800, wherever it idle's, not sure the actual number i just know it's under 1000, i always thought it wasn't too much of a problem but what do i know... haha

I agree with Booklynbay, sounds like something in the real of idle control is dirty. clean what he said.

By the way, cleaning the IAC fixed my Idle problems that weren't related to the intake gasket.
