Expensive German Stuff
As per an earlier recommendation on this board, I finally ordered some high temp Mastic from www.mcmaster.com and installed it over the weekend. First of all, this stuff is the exact same thing as regular Dynamat, just without the Dynamat label. Second of all, this stuff is awesome! For $25 I got, delivered to my door in two days, two sheets of the stuff which was enough to do all four doors with enough left over to do all the pilars and some other misc. areas around the car. Here's the part #: 9709T18.

The primary reason I got it was because when my midbass hit, the plastic moisture barrier in the boor would buzz. The Mastic completely eliminated all of that! Not only that, but the car is much quieter now, and the doors close with a nice solid *thunk.* This stuff is really easy to work with too, just trace the outline of the door panel onto it, cut out some holes in the center for the speaker opening and the door handle, peel the paper off the back and stick it on.

Anyway, highly recommended! One of the best bang-for-the-buck improvements to your stereo, I think.

peace

Mike

Mike,

Did you install the Mastic on top of the moisture barrier?

Yes. You're not supposed to remove that moisture barrier.

sounds like a great product. dynamat is really expensive. but now that they have some competition, maybe prices will drop.

what exactly is midbass?

glad you're happy with it.. I recommended it a while back. I'm still considering getting somne.. but you know how funds are.. did it smell real bad? thats one reason I hesitated..I wanted to save up for some RAAM mat or dynamat Xtreme just because of the smell.. how about application?

Hey Darkfox

Didn't smell bad at all. I just got a fiberglass box built for my new a/d/s/ sub, so that's currently stinkin' up the truck enough that I don't smell the mastic :). It is really not noticible though, and what little smell there was went away in a couple of days.

Application is a piece 'o cake. Peel off the backing and stick on the door panel.

Dan, midbass is the range of frequencies that is in between the highs that are handled by the tweeters and the subbass that is handled by the subwoofer. In my case, my midbass is handled by 6.5" drivers in the factory locations in the door.

do i have midbass?

hrmm, cool, I thought it was the kind you had to heat up.. but if its just a sticky application I'm definatley gonna get me some now.. the smell I can deal with.. I have enough smells, but my odorban can fix that ;)

midbass is something I dont have.. between my 5.25" components and 12s.. I'm missing a lot of freq. right now heh

aw poo! they're out of the part # you listed.. now they're carrying 9709T19 .. there doesn't appear to be a difference..looks like the same stuff, mayube just a different thickness? are you sure this sutff is just adhesive backed? it doesn't req. a heat gun or anything? (got any pics? ;) ) I'd really like to get rid of the rattles in my hatch door

i would suggest using tree sap. **** works too.

Hey Darkfox

Yup, just adhesive-backed. No heat gun required. No pics, sorry. I usually remember to take pics after my projects are finished and everything is back together, and I don't want to pull those door panels off again :).

Mid bass is frequencies between 80hz and 120Hz. Sub bass would be anything below 80Hz, midrange between 120hz-3.5kHz. High's are 3.5kHz and up. Subsonic bass would usually fall around 35-25hz and below. Basically what you can't hear.

Steve

so im guessing i have mid bass.

it depends on your crossover points

Set the high pass crossover on your 4 channel amp around 80Hz and on your sub amp 80Hz down. This way you won't lose any freqencies and each speaker will play in a range that will make it sound best.

Steve

awesome ill do that

I hear ya on that heh, well I tried to order some today.. get this..

I was poking around on the site to see if when I added a quantity to my order would it give me a total, tryin to see how much shipping would be.. well it did, so I closed the window.. about 20 minutes later I opened a new one, went to the site and tried to order me some.. I ordered 1 sheet and said next day air.. and submitted.. they send me an email saying I have 1 order for 5 sheets.. and another for 1 sheet.. apparently the site cookied me the 1st time and remembered that order.. so I go back to the site and go to orders to cancel the 5... well, the only thing that shows is the 5.. so I cancel it.. s now theres this mystery of whether or not the 1 sheet is still coming.. I emailed them and told them what happened, but heh, what a hassle :P

I want a sheet for my hatch.. think 1 will be enough? 32"X54" .07" thick

32X54 will be plenty. i used rubberized undercoating on my hatch to deaden it. it doesnt take much, so one sheet should be enough.

those sites are evil
