Has anyone tried to do this? This is made for the jeep and is obviously too short for an x, but I was thinking of choping it at the red line and welding or bolting in a new section of square tubing. Yeah, it will be a pain cuz the back door will be blocked, but do you all think it will work?

guess it could if you dont mien removing it EVERYTIME you need to get in...

but

y not just make or get soem oen to fab up a swing out one??

PEACE

because I own this one and I could make it work for free. If I had to have someone make me one, it wouldn't be free! But you're right, a swing out one would be nicer, but this would only be used when I know clearence will be an issue (in a parking garage or something like that) otherwise the spare will be on the roof. I just want a backup carrier.

oh ok ..... . thats a Cool idea......

kinda like my tire carrier that was free cuz my dad already had it

PEACE

Why is it too short, I dont get it. Wouldnt it be better if it DIDNT block the rear view?

i think if it was too short it would look goofy... you gotta remember that that moutns in a hitch.. think of how far that is from the hitch point to the top of the bumper.. than you have very little(from waht i can see from the pic)

mine i think is a good height ill get a pic of it in a min

PEACE

You can get one from jcwhitney.

They run $43.95 p/n 81RD6680N

I have one works great.

If I put in on as is, it would look something like this. Maybe even a little lower. It would work, but would look goofy. (I suck with photo programs)

Alto,
Is there a way you could measure yours? Yours looks pretty good. I wonder if mine is the same size.

my first picture is with 31" tire and no lift, the second is with 3"body lift & 33" tires.
There is a good look of it in my signature.

I had a basket added to it to hold my Sand filled tow strap, boots anything that I wanted to get to fast but didn't want to have in the truck. Plus with my Gerry Cans it sits out where the hole is drilled.

If I didn't have my Cans I would drill a new hole and cut about 2"- 4" off so it would be closer to the back of the truck. As it is now I can still open the rear glass. If I cut it I don't know how close I could get it & still open the glass.

Hey PAExplorer, don't worry about the goofy comment I've been called alot worse, goofy is the nicest

How sturdy are those things? I have a hitch mount bike rack and when i go around turns it leans a little to the sides when theres weight on it.... wouldnt a 33" (or 32 in my case) tire make it wobble around a little bit?

i htink that looks fine

you're right about the angle, but alto's is about 5" further out than mine would be. He has the gas cans and other stuff in between the tire and the truck.

a Few months ago I saw one on a jeep website that fit in the tow hitch. It had supports so it would not sway around and it had a locking pin that would it allow it to fold down to access the hatch. It also has a spot on it to relocate the license plate so it is not blocked. It was pictured an a grand cherokee. I believe it is made by a company called Bon-a-rue.
