Home made mass

you need to get rid of that asap or you are going to run into major problems. don't you have any relatives (brothers, dads, uncles- anything) around to make sure you don't do crap like that to your truck? i'm just glad that when i was a little younger i had people to protect me a bit. when it blows up not even the infinite wisdom found on this site will be able to tell you why since know one will have a clue just what affect that thing was having.

I give that duct tape about 25 miles before it comes apart and gets sucked into the engine.

The way you have it set up, most of the air is NOT hitting the sensor, and the MAS is giving the PCM inaccurate readings. That is why you needed to restrict the airflow with the hockey puck - to force more air over the MAS.

The MAS is the MOST IMPORTANT fuel injection sytstem sensor. I'd put it back to stock. Keep the big air filter though.

I would think you could check if it is too lean or rich by checking the spark plugs..If they are black it is too rich, if white too lean. At least that is what we do int he motorcycle world.

OK, so you have a big a$$ piece of PVC with a restrictor in it. 77 mm while stock is 55mm. What is 77 minus 1/2 a hockey puck? Yea, ghetto does sum it up fairly well.

The stock computer program tends to run the motor a bit rich. Ask any performance guy, and they'll tell you leaning out the stock computer program a little bit will make more power. This is because the ratio of air to fuel will approach perfect efficiency.

However, computer mods are well thought out and programmed with a safety factor still built in.

Your ghetto MAS is leaning out the A/F mix. However, it's not properly calibrated by any means and you'll probably running too hot of a combustion and will eventually burn plugs, valves, pistons, and exhaust parts.

I suggest you put your stock MAS back on and get an Apten chip.

ok, this is gonna sound dumb, but if I get an aftermarker Mass, do i need to have the computer calibrated, or is the new sensor ready to go? I know on explorerexpress they calibrate them for hi-po air filters, is that what I would need for the KKM? thanks guys

It's the sensor that's calibrated. I doubt the Hi-Po calibration makes much of a difference but that's what you wanna go for if you buy a new MAF.

thanks, hey, a guy from everett, nice

I have a question. What is that intake tube you have there, and where did you get it?
Also, it appears you have a crankcase vent filter there instead of having it hooked to the intake, that's interesting.

I was told by someone that it is actually irrigation piping used on farms. Im not totally sure though, I just happened to find 2 three foot pieces and a 45 degree elbow at a friends house. The 90 degree angle is a rubber elbow for 3" PVC. And the little filter that you see is hooked to the tube that went to the stock intake, I got it at champion auto for $5, It is a universal APC breather filter.

I give that duct tape about 25 miles before it comes apart and gets sucked into the engine.

I'v gone alittle over 100 miles now, and it is holding up just fine, and the truck is still running GREAT.

Is this true? Will the spark plugs show if I am running too rich or too lean?

The MAS is basically programmed for fuel injector size and MAS inlet size. The main computer takes those signals and plugs them into it's programs to determine operating parameters.

This is why taking a Mustang MAS and putting it in your Explorer usually doesn't work even though the injectors are the same: The Explorer sensor programming doesn't know the MAS is larger and the computer leans the motor out way too much.

will any after market mass such as the one they sell on explorerexpress or granatelli have this problem with out a chip that has been programmed for the difference?

no, because they've been programmed for the proper flow. However, you'll see much better gains with a chip.

audiodude332001,

Not going to say 100% but that is what they do on motorcycles and seeing as an engine is an engine I would think this would hold true no matter if a car or lawnmower. If I know anything it is about motorcycles.

You could buy a differant sensor made for a bigger MAF unit. But then why would you do that, probably cheaper to just buy the bigger MAF.

One cheap trick that I only slightly remember from my Ford Escort days was people putting a resistor between one of the MAS wires...this fooled the car into thinking it was getting colder air all the time even in the summer. A ton of people did that cheap mod, no one blow their engine. It was posted back int he day on the ZX2.com board...don't think it is still around. I will look to see if I saved any of that information but I doubt if I had.

The IAT resistor mod has been discussed here before. Not a good idea.

I'm not saying that I would do this by any means.

But it seems you would have some classic lean symptoms like rattle and the temp running hotter then normal if it was lean... as far as rich .. if it was that far off seems you would see a lot of black on the tailpipe and black smoke when you punched it.

Ok, since I replaced my spark plugs about 2 months ago, I decided to pull two out and see what color they were, to help me see if I was running too rich or too lean, and they were nice and white. So I ripped my new mass off and put my old one back on. Thanks everyone for the input on my mass. I won't go and do anything like that again.
Thanks,
Andy

And we all lived happily ever after ;)

Cheap DIY mods are great, but usually not when messing with sensors. Ask anyone here, my X was pretty "ghetto rigged". But I paid attention and spent the money where it counted.

yeah ill agree with alec, ghetto mods are great..... but they can also run you into problems....i was ghetto and took off my inner fenderwells for tire clearance, plus it looked cool when i opened the hood and you could see the tires right there.... well anyway, i cut a huge hole in my airbox to get mroe airflow... this was great on the street.... but i forgot about it and went wheeling.... now my truck doesnt run becuase i hydrolocked the engine nad eventually threw a connecting rod through my block on hte freeway at 80 mph!
